So I got my 86 f350 crew 6.9 DRW about a week and a half ago and took it on its first job today.....all I can say is damn I'm loving it.
The truck it is replacing is a 99 dodge 2500 5.9.
4k lbs of travertine in the bed, and the truck was rock solid and pulled strong (not gonna win any races, put didn't turn into a wallowing mushy dog like the dodge does)
I cannot tell you all how happy I am with this truck (ended up buying it for about a grand), or this forum for all of the knowledge I gained before making the jump.
I should be getting my ats kit in the next week or so, and will be installing the GV unit at the same time. I cant wait till I get it done as it seems like at the end of the day I am going to have a very decent hauling machine for under $3k.
will be posting them soon...its not a beauty queen by any stretch, but its a deffinate workhorse.
Cant wait to get the other goodies on, I test drove so many f350's, as well as dodge and gm 3500's, and this one was the oldest & ugliest, but felt the most mechanically solid truck (and the fact that the owner had 3 boxes of records going back to the day it left the lot was comforting). It was nice to see that that rock solid feel was still there with a load.
Honestly the only thing I am not liking is the 4spd/4.10 combination for the highway...in town it rocks, but for keeping up with traffic it gets a workout and I am expecting the OD to solve that nicely.
Thats about right....at 65 it deffinatly had more pull left, but it just seemed way too wound out. I am hoping with the OD I can comfortably run in the 70~75 range without spinning her to death.
Okay, now to show my stupidity as I have never had a diesel with a granny 1st, is there any issue of starting out in 2nd when I am running unloaded? Its not like I need to feather the clutch or anything to make it move, and first gear is good for maybe 7mph (although it rocked for starting on a 7% incline when I was loaded)
I always start in 2nd, these really don't have a granny gear, first is not near as low as the old 70s model trucks with the np435, but 2nd is still good to start in, as with most diesels, you start off and never touch the gas before you are completely off the clutch, if it won't do this in 2nd, use 1st
