well momma had my truck yesterday so i hitched a ride home with a guy we had helping at our big commercial job. he's a directional driller, good guy, smart with his money, unlike many oil patch workers. anyway, he's got an '07 dodge 3500/5.9 cummins/4x4/auto, laramie i think, its got leather and all that stuff. anyway, my opinions... POWER... stock truck and i gotta say i love the cummins sound and general diesel power. other than that, the interior looks like it was designed by a 3 year old with lego's, ride is harsh to the point of being unbelievable... i know, a 1 ton truck, but i've been in all 3 brands for 1 tons and this is the worst!! tranny clunks at every shift and especially when taking off from a stop, shudders around 80km/h... dealers say its normal, but encouraged him to buy extended warranty and expect the front end and tranny to poop around 80-100k...
anyway, i gotta say that if it wasn't for the engine, (and blind brand loyalty ) i think dodge would have been ***** up long ago in the HD department!!
any time my shop is slow the boss calls all his dodge buddies to bring their **** cans down and we end up having to work on them. constantly needs new steering and suspension components.
I do love the cummins powerplants too. Anyone that drives one and compares them to a powerstroke says that. Although i have nothing against the powerstroke powerplant either.
well because my shop is an International Associate Dealer we see a lot of the powerstrokes as the engine is based off the International engine (basically IS the international engine with ford badging) and because the guy who owns my shop is a Dodge nut and that the 8.3 and 5.9 cummins is in a lot of trucks, i see a lot of both engines and i must say that the powerstroke is definitely an easier engine to work on. but man, we had a motorhome in there a few months ago, like a huge mother of a bus worth about half a million, with a 5.9 cummins that was making 450 horse. thats insane!
You know, I think you are the first guy I have ever heard say that a powerstroke engine is easier to work on! (im also assuming you mean pre6 liter).
Cummins 5.9's are like a chevy 350, or a ford 302 when it comes to making hp. They are so common, there are so many aftermarket parts for them, reasonably priced ones, that they can make the big HP for cheap.
One FTE member here has put a 5.9 cummins in his 01-02 superduty, and he is making around 550 horse, getting around 18mpg last time I talked with him!
I spent quite a bit of time in a Dodge w/5.9 and the engine is what makes the truck. Part of why they have worked out so well is that in this class of truck, the engine is a big factor in the rating of the truck. They do ride rougher and the interior amenities are not up to snuff with the Ford and GM. I have also been driving Ward's Dmax lots while I shop around for something to replace my F350.
I looked at one of those Dodge Resistol duallies with 36000 kms and it stands out like my old Lariat 'LE' dually did!
like i've said before, those resistol's are sharp looking trucks. have you been in one Laredo?? is the interior more on par with the competition than the standard issue dodges??
My wife has two uncle's that both have dodge diesel's and contantly bug my brother in law, father in law and me for driving our fords. If they only new what is was like to drive a newer ford. The one uncle's '03 dodge caught fire while he was sleeping one night last year.
200lbs shouldn't make that much difference. thing is, the weight is known, so its no excuse. the truck should simply be better built to ride more comfortably. a truck can be tough without being rough... hence, FORD!!!
Part of the reason for the poor ride is that the Cummins weighs about 200lbs more than the PSD.
Shouldn't the dodge ride better? Usually a loaded truck rides smoother than an empty one..
Any idea of the Ford and the dodge truck weights in a 3/4 or a 1 ton?
the dodge website is very bleak and hard to deal with, but the 3500 laramie weighs in at 7062lbs, the only weight given. that's diesel, quad cab-4x4... the ford F350 in crew cab ranges from 6300 to 7700lbs depending on what format and accessories i guess... the weight arguement is nil.
