I have a chance to buy a 1996 F-350 with a blown powerstroke.
Here are the specs:
regular cab xlt
4x4 dana 60 front w/ 4.10's
5 speed
The truck is almost perfect inside and out. A friend of mine owns it and told me to give him what I thought it might be worth. The engine blew last week and he bought a new one today.
I could fix it, use the axles under my 92' F-250, or convert my 93 dually to a 4x4, so it's not like I can't use it. Thanks in advance for the input!!
Not sure I would just offer what you are willing to pay. That is all it is really worth, what somebody is willing to give for it.
I am REALLY interested in the tranny. My bro lives in Chester S.C. and wants a 5 speed really bad. He has a freshly rebuilt auto that he probably would part with for the parts off that 5 speed. PM me if interested.
If you don't want to truck let me know. I am looking for a rebuildable block as well.
If I were offered that deal, I'd say $1000 for the truck (it sounds real clean), then pick up and engine for $1000 to $1500 and swap it in.
A weekend + a few hours and $2000 - $2500 for a clean 4x4 Truck. And replace your '92 with it.
On the other hand if you want to oart it out, still $1000. Part it, use what you need, or sell parts, as in parts its worth alot more than $1000. The trans or front 60 are worth almost that each.
So just what's "blown" about the engine? Maybe it'd be worth a rebuild, if it'd be cheaper than a swap, and if there's no rush getting it on the road. I'd still say Dirk's right, and offer $1000, maybe $1500 if it's in good shape rust-wise and all the XLT power goodies work.
Thanks guys!!! As it turned out I gave $1200.00 for the truck. The truck is now at my sisters in a huge barn (2hrs away), so no rush. The truck is in pristine condition except for the engine. I spoke to the mechanic that pulled the heads and something went terribly wrong in cylinder #7. He seems to think that the cylinder hydrolocked from water getting into the cylinder. The piston is now busted and there is a crack in the cylinder wall. I haven't seen it yet so I can't say. The motor will not turn over now. The mechanic also told me that it appears to be a couple of tiny pinholes in the cylinder wall.
Tim, my buddy said when he went to crank it the morning it blew, that it made a loud thud when he went to crank it. He finally got it started and it was running very rough. He was on the way to the shop 2 miles from his house when the bang happened and it just quit running.
Thanks for the replies, I guess now I'm in no hurry as to what I will do with it. The youngest daughter knows I have a new 7.3 IDI in the barn I could slap in it for her college graduation present. Gotta love Kids.
Neal, If I later decide to part it, you will be the first to know.
Edit: Forgot to mention, the truck has 135,000 miles on it

Cavitation? Sounds like someone forgot their DCA-4.

This is TOTAL speculation, but I wonder if you could frankenstein together one good DIT engine from the IDI block and pistons, and the rest of the powerstroke bits from the blown engine.
Great deal, BTW, esp. if the truck proper is in such good shape.
