Tried pulling my front drive shaft today with much difficulty. I've had this off in the past, twice to replace the boot. Always before, I could lower the tranny support member to gain the extra clearance. Today, I had to jack the engine as well to slide the shaft out. This made me wonder if my motor mounts have become "squished" over time. They look perfectly fine but they are original 1991 vintage. Has anyone else removed theirs and compared new to old?
Check the clearance between the tips of the fan blade and the shroud. If there is significant settling in the rubber, the lower edges of the fan tips will be much closer that the upper.
Good tip xlt. I'm getting significant driveline vibration from the from driveshaft - which is worn after all these miles, but I also notice there is a slight angle between the transfer case output shaft and the front differential, which would exacerbate vibration. I'm thinking both the tranny support and engine mounts may be in need of replacement.
So, would you be calling around Ford dealerships for these parts, or checking the salvage yards for usable replacements? Are they available from other sources?
I figure sooner or later, I'll need them as well. My van is going on 20 years old. I don't have driveline vibrations yet, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time.
Both engine and tranny mounts/support are available from Rock Auto and Checker Auto. I haven't replaced them yet as I am still trying to find a new/salvage front driveshaft which is proving more difficult than one would imagine.
