heater core

Has anyone had any recent success finding a heater core that fits for the 80-80 F-150 pu with factory AC. The ones from the local parts stores wont fith in the heater box. Was trying to avoid the dealer for cost reasons however I may have to bite the bullet. They want 85 bucks!

Go to www.natauto.com and get there info. You can call and order it from their number or you can order their magazine and order it from it. They have MANY helpful parts.

I got my heater core from them for like 35 dollars or so..

I had both an O'Reilly's and Napa in mine, no fit problems, just the O'Reilly's core leaked a year after install..

Thanks...I will check and see. The supplier says they made the core a universal fit item . It wont go in the heater box. Its actually in an F-800 however its the same core as my 84 and 86 pickup. I robbed one from an 85 bronco I have but now its leaking.( it was the original one so its old) The OEM is kinda rounded on the top but all the aftermarket ones I find are squared off on the top. I even tried NAPA they have the same problem. They want you to put a square core in a rounded box!

As much grief that you have had with cheap "universal fit" aftermarket cores, paying $50 extra for a Ford OEM part might not be such a bad deal. I wouldn't want my replacement core to start leaking after only a year of service.

I have seen that many are going to aluminum cores, while the original isbrass. Mine that I got from NAPA a few years ago is also a brass...

Thanks for all the info. As bad as I hated to I forced the aluminum core into the heater box. It distorted it a little but all the screws went back in. I didnt find one anywhere even FORD! ( the local car dealer anyway) Didnt go to the heavy truck center but if this one leaks later on I will go to the dealer. It was 22 bucks at Autozone so if it lasts a year then its ok. Its only about 20 min to change. Thanks again!

Also I have the hi-lo heat option and high output AC thats what made it so difficult. The aftermarket vendors offer 1 core for anything with AC. the non AC is square on the top but the tubes are different. Heavy truck center says there are 4 different ones it could be. The engineering code was off the sticker on the bottom. Anyways will see what happens!

I'm having to change my heater core now. How do you tell which of the 4 you have? Mine is an F250, 460 with A/C. I was planning on taking my old one in to compare. Do these come out under the hood or under the dash? I just have the inlets looped for now, but when it rains, I have no defog. And it always rains in Seattle....

heater core

I have an F-800 but the interior is identicle to the 80 to 86 F series. The heater core is identicle also however the aftermarket industry has changed the shape of the aftermarket core.I put a used one from an 85 bronco that I have junked out and it was a perfect fit however didnt last long. I got the aftermarket one in there with some prying and pushing and it distorted the plastic core box but the cover went back on. The aftermarket was 25 bucks and Ford wanted 85 bucks so with the economy like it is I went with aftermarket. I have factory AC and it removed from the inside ( about 20 minutes to change) Its a little more difficult without factory AC. If its an 80 to 86 it should be the same as mine. Remove the glove box compartment and then there are about 8 screws on a flat plastic door and that exposes the core. Its a pain if you dont take out the glovebox compartment ( 5 screws with a stubby #2 phillips) Good Luck

I agree with a lot of the earlier posts - I tried everywhere to find the rounded off heater core but couldn't. So I settled for the square top aluminum "universal fit". It does take some forcing to make it fit in the box. If I recall correctly you need to put the tubes through the holes in the back of the box first, then get the bottom of the core in the box and then just push the top to make it all fit.

My first replacement started leaking after about two weeks, but I was able to take it back for an exchange. So far no problems so maybe just a manufacturing fluke. But considering how hard I was trying to force it in I'm not that surprised a seam opened up. Like everything else the second time replacing went much smoother.
