smell coolant in the truck sometimes, checked heater core, no leaks. Losing about 3 quarts every 500 k or so, nothing on the ground and no visible leaks. Figure its egr, but what are the chances of the head gaskets being over? Seems to be running fine and cant find any visible signs of coolant in the oil. Why do I smell coolant in the truck? 2005 6.0 65000 miles.

Reason: forgot some info.
Any white spots on the degas bottle around the cap? Actually, you should still be under the 5yr/100k- had to search your profile- so best bet is take it back to the dealer. Could be HG's, EGR cooler? Any white smoke coming from the exhaust?
When you can smell it, a likely candidate is a leaking EGR Cooler hose.
I agree w/ Tim - if it is under warranty, then take it in. I know, it is $100 deductible ..... MAYBE.
Read your warranty and confirm w/ the dealership, but anything EGR related should be covered at 0 deductible (look up your emissions warranty in your manual).
thanks guys, no white smoke from the tailpipe and no spots around the degas cap. under warranty for sure but dealer says cant touch it for a month. Maybe I should just put a bypass in myself and be done with it.
yes - very much easier ....... maybe a 1 hour job.
FYI
Coolant flows out of the filter base and into the EGR cooler through a hose. The hose is about 3 inches long. The early versions of this hose were prone to leak. The early hoses were orange. The updated hose is blue.
I have a `05 F-450 w/6.0 . A couple of years ago I had the same problem.Found that the head gasket was blown and it was sucking the coolant into the combustion chamber. The dealer milled the heads and replaced the gaskets under warranty. It took several days.
Thanks again lads, I asked because I would rather take 1 hour to change that hose, if in fact that is the problem, than leave my truck at the dealer for who knows how many days, warranty or not. Appreciate your input Bismic.
You can see the end of it that attaches to the oil filter base. You have to lay on your engine and essentially look for a hose from the oil filter base that goes under the turbo (exhaust wheel). It is under the turbo that it attaches to the EGR cooler tube.
