Don't know the gearing part, some one probaly will soon tho. As for the tach you will need to find either an aftermarket diesel tach or try to use one of the factory ones. You nwil all so need the sensor that srews into the drivers side of the ip housing adapter. It has to be a diesel tach gassers will not work.

I never get tired of hearing of 70s fords getting converted.

Gear your truck for how you will use it the most. For mostly rural and city driving in ~40 MPH speed zones, 3.55, 3.73 or 4.10 gears. This is also a good gearing for towing up to 55 MPH (55 is usually the practical limit for towing with a non turbo IDI diesel when weight gets above 5000lbs)

For running empty in speed zones of 55-75 MPH, 3.55, 3.33, 3.08 or taller would be better for you. You will still be able to tow with those gears, but certain tasks will be harder, like getting a big trailer "out of the hole", or dragging a heavier boat up a boat launch. Really tall gears might even make the boat ramp situation impossible, so bear that in mind. The advantage would be good fuel economy at higher speeds since those trucks are quite light weight.

Is this 2wd or 4wd?
