Injector cleaner

Last month I posted this thread https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...-a-diesel.html.

At that point my rig had the Jeckel and Hyde performance issues back from last year.

I asked a buddy who was a Ford tech for 20 yrs and now has his own shop for ideas. Without hesitation he asked if I was using any injector cleaner. My answer was no. Went to the parts store and bought a couple bottles of Techron good for 12 gal each and dumped them in at the next fill. I could tell a difference before I was off the lot. Engine was noticeably smoother.

Hooked on to the hauler and headed for Glacier. Rig was running good. Stopped for fuel with about a half left and once again could tell a difference immediately. This time not for the better.

When we got home 3 bottles of Techron went in the next tank and it was ran as close to empty as I was comfortable with. The rig runs as good empty as it ever has.

Last week we hooked on to the hauler and headed for Idaho. Once again that headwind was there for the first 200 miles but only gusting to 25ish most of the time. Ran in drive at 65 mph except on the hills where a downshift was required on the larger ones. Still only made 5 mpg on the first tank but the rig would move without getting out and pushing. Pulled Lookout pas both ways at over 50 mph. Made up to 7.5 mpg and probably averaged 6-6.5 with the trailer on. Ran around quite a bit in ID without trailer so hard to figure exactly.

All in all I'm much happier. Still not strong enough to run OD except in the easiest going. Just not enough grunt below 2000 rpm. May try an exhaust to see if we can liven things up a little more. Just want to keep it quiet.

About 35k now. 3k less when I first ran the Techron. Didn't want to get optimistic too soon, but it seems to still be running well.

Sounds like you have a few more problems than just that. You have 4.30 gears so it shouldnt be a problem. I have 3.73s in mine and can run down the interstate in OD doing 70 with a 7klb trailer no problem. Of course up some hills it goes down to D but not for long. And i have 128k miles.

Your buddy the tech guy is correct in reccomending teckron... It is what the dealer uses packaged differently. I wonder what your fuel preassure is, and fuel volume.

Most guys run Teckron monthly or quarterly, then use Lucas every tank. You can treat with lucas 100 gal for $9.99. useing the 3oz per 10 gal method.

I would consider either buying a tuner, or have your buddy the tech guy, hookit up at his dealer and tweak it, to maintain the warranty if you have one. Thats what I did. Ford tech set it to motor sports specs. It was night and day, with my 5.4 liter.

alternatives are BG products (they make some good stuff), sea foam which worked very well in my wifes tahoe with 120k, or half a bottle of tranny fluid every 3rd or 4th fill up.

My truck is 5 YO with a little under 40k on it. I run a tank of injector cleaner (not brand specific, Techron is crazy expensive) about once a year and run a tank or two of water remover during the winter. Never any issues and never a big fan of additives myself. The only form of fuel injector cleaner I have any faith in is the stuff they use at the dealer that they shoot straight into the fuel rails.

Here in Metro New York, we run 10% ethanol year-round. No fuel injection cleaner necessary

This injector cleaner kit seems like it may be worth a try. Once my truck get 40K miles on it i might try it. http://www.shop3m.com/60455031587.html
