Ladies and Gentleman, I use that loosly, I was on the way home one after noon and got the dredded "D" coil pack failure. Before this problen i was getting 16-19 @ 70 MPG I thought I got bad fuel some where. I bought Lucus fuel lubricant and Chevron Techrolen and changed the fuel filter. Instructions for Lucas is 3 oz. per 20 gallans but of coarse i was applying about 3 times that much nad one bottle of Techron per 10 gallans one bottle treats 20 gallans. But of course it was the coil. I replaced the airfilter with a K@N when i bought the truck. After replacing the coil and changing the plugs Autolite double platnums, and cleaning the tips of the full injectors with a needle. I started reading the overhead instant MPG it was reading 24-26 @ 70MPH This cant be right. So I filled up with Chevron plus unleaded. reset my AVG MPG and tripometer. After running out the tank I got 435 miles out a full tank with city mileage of 18-21 highway mileage of 24-26 @70MPH draft a semi rig and get 36MPG Can some one please explain this one. WAHOO
C'mon...25mpg in that land sled?? (no offense but it just ain't gonna happen in an Expy without a tailwind going downhill!).
I would run a couple of tanks using the NON COMPUTER method of calculating MPG. Fill tank, zero trip odometer then calulate mpg based on the amount of fuel added at next fillup.
Cleaning the injectors with a needle? Hmmmm...I hate to be a ***** (get it, it's a pun...) but that doesn't sound like the greatest idea in the world to me...nor does running highly concentrated mixes of different injection cleaners.
36mpg at 70 mph? Maybe if you were chained to the semi, with the engine off. 24-26mpg at 70 when flying solo? 18-21 in the city? Nope...not buying that either.
What I don't understand is how you're getting "city" and "highway" miles so discreetly organized on one tank of gas. Even if 98 Expys had an instant mpg, it would be impossible to keep accurate records of it.
435 miles on one tank of gas? On 26 gallons? Ok, let's call it 24 gallons with 2 for reserve. That's still only 18.1mpg. At 26 gallons, that'd be 16.7mpg. To get, say, 24mpg average over our 24 gallons (with 2 for reserve), you'd be looking at 576 miles...not 435. Me thinks the suggested pen and paper route would help a bit.
My truck has a 30 gallon tank in it. Not sure about the 98's. if you take 435/28 gallons. 2 for reserve, you get 15.5 MPG that's more like what I get combined city with highway. So he may not be a math major.... I usually get 11.8 in the city and if I'm VERY light on the gas pedal when coastin' down to Florida every year for vacation about 16.8
I have to say I got a good laugh from these posts.. No offense intended it was just kind of funny... Loved the "Chained to a semi going down hill" I'll try it on my next road trip, that's what the tow loops on the front are for right?
I drive mostly in town am lucky to avg. 11.4 mpg in my 99 EB 4x4 and I know how you guy's feel...
I run Premium in mine and man with the gas prices what they are I have not put more than 1/2 a tank at a time in the beast for many weeks.. Keep hoping it'll go down sometime..
I'm lucky to get 300 miles out of a tank. I'm sure thats because my foot is through the radiator everywhere I go. I like to hear my exhaust I guess. 4.6 = snail So I'll admit it, It's my fault...
