Hey guys just got myself an 01 navigator and love it but theres a few things that bother me about it. It has the navigation system but it seems to be rather old and only has a few streets in my area is there a new dvd rom i can use to update it? and i also found out the sub in the back is not working the amp doesnt seem to be putting out any power (hooked up a test meter to it and turned the volume up on the radio and nothing registered) is there anything i should check? how hard is it to replace the amp?
you can get new cd's from navtech, but they are pricey. you are better off upgrading to an a/m head unit with nav. i prefer eclipse, but there are other brands. check CL and EBAY for some good deals used. then you usually only have one disc, instead of switching discs by region. as far as the sub.....
Well im pretty sure its the factory amp that goes to the sub thats no goodi i tested it by hooking up a voltmeter to the output wires that come out of the amp and turning the radio and bass up and looking for any reading but there was none. Can i purchase a small aftermarket amp and replace the factory one with it? if so what is the factory amp removal process and what is the wiring process.

The output of the amp is AC, so make sure you are on the right setting on your VOM. Also, did you make sure there is power going IN to the amp?
99% of any aftermarket amp you install is going to require some work, especially running new wires. If you are going to do that, I'd toss the factory setup and just get an MTX thunderform or similar, with a built in amp and bigger speaker. I think the MTX version is a drop in replacement, but not 100% sure on that.
OK, well i dont think i need to replace the sub i think its still good plus im not too worried about what kind of sub is in there as long as theres some bass because theres none right now. I was thinking about just removing the factory amp and using the existing wires and running them into an aftermarket amp. I mean there should just be a power and signal wire running to the factory amp right? cant i just cut those and run them to a new amp? and the factory sub has the standard positive and negative connections so that wont be a problem. I just need the directions on the best way to remove the amp, after that ill be able to figure everything out my self.
Well i figured it out it was pretty easy, all i had to do was just pull on the panel and unclip it and then i had access to the amp, the input connector to the amp was unplugged which lead me to believe the previous owner already tried to do something with it. As soon as i plugged in the connector, the number 1 (25 amp) fuse blows (even with the keys not in the ignition). Does this mean the amp is bad?
Also i saw 5 input wires on the connector im guessing they are power, ground, amp turn on, and left and right channel input, does anyone know the wire color reference for the wires im thinking about wiring up an aftermarket amp instead of going through the trouble of trying to find another factory amp.
I believe others have done this. You might be better off posting this question in the Audio/Video section of this forum found here. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum60/
