I thought the same thing until I installed a scanguage II and could watch my transmission temp. The transmission actually runs cooler when I let it go into overdrive while towing. When there is a hill to climb it shifts out of overdrive anyway. The only time I lock it out now is if it starts hunting in and out or while decending a gentle grade.
