So seeing as I'm turning my 78' into a street machine and DD and Highway runner(The highway drives would usually be 200km each way).
I'm running the 300 straight six, atm. I do want something with more power though. Seeing as there's so many ford cars/trucks on the farm(alteast 8-10), I have a few choices.
As far as I know theres:
a few other 300's
a 302
351C
351W
400M(Not too sure on this one, need to check)
So what would be the better motor? I'm thinking the 351C but not sure exactly.
If you're doing a lot of the 200 km highway driving, you'll spend less on gas if you keep the straight six. I wouldn't go for the 302; they're not the best choice for a truck motor if you're doing any kind of hauling or towing. You'll have to do research to see how much work it'd take to put the 351 Cleveland in, because they were only offered for 4 or 5 years in passenger cars. The 351W is a great motor, but you'd have to make something work out of later-year motor mounts. The 400 (no M) won't bolt up to your transmission.
My opinion is that the 300 is the most reliable of all the engines. Expect to do a rebuild on any high-mileage 335-series motor (this includes the 351C and 400) because it probably won't have much oil pressure. Seeing as gas is going up again, I'd stick with the 300. There is still lots of power there.
