I have had trouble occasionally over the past few weeks starting my F250 with V10. Sometimes it will try to start, but nothing happens, it makes a very slight trying to turn over noise. And sometimes the guages flip all the way over to max speed, tach, etc.
Up till yesterday, eventually I was always able to get it started. I drove about an hour, then shut it off. 15 minutes later it did the guage flip thing, and would not start. The battery said 12.4 volts (metered on charger), and I had full lights, radio, etc.
I put it on the charger at 25 amps (automatic charger that steps down as needed) for three hours. The charger said the battery was full. It then started fine.
Does this sound like a battery issue? It is the original, so it is 7 years old at least.
7yrs old! I'd replace it anyway...If you have an extra person nearby, you can make your own load tester. With a voltmeter measure voltage at the battery and have someone crank it over. If voltage drops below 10.5v (while cranking) the battery has died
For the record, a battery at 100% charge is usually around 12.63 volts.
It's very possible for a battery showing 50% or better charge to fail a load test and not be able to push a starter.
Best way to have checked it yourself was to hook the voltage meter to the battery and try starting. If the voltage dropped down below, let's say 10 volts or so, it's probably toast.
