Remember back when I removed the rear tank? Well I pulled up to refuel for the second time the other day and for some reason it kept foaming up into the filler neck and shutting the pump off every 1/4 gallon It didn't do this when I filled it up the first time. Like what you suggested Dave i removed the inner filler neck. I would have guessed that that would be the problem except it didn't do it on the first time. What do you think. I'm guessing that maybe the vent is somehow stopped up but I'm not sure how.
Were you perhaps using the larger truck nozzle the second time and the smaller auto nozzle the first time?
Was it at the same station?
Where I fuel, I use the smaller auto nozzle unless I have to use the big one.
I usually am able to run it wide open.
This morning I went to fuel up, they turned the pump flow rate up over the weekend.
So today I had to hold 1/2 open to keep it from clicking the pump off.
All fuel pumps are not created equal in terms of flow rate.
No it wasn't the same station. The first was Shell, the other GATE (I'm pretty sure is just a local). Both had the small nozzles. It wasn't really how fast I pumped. I couldn't even run half way at the second refuel. If I even barely cracked it, it would immediately foam up the filler neck and dump fuel on the ground. I could let it sit a second or two then try again and yet again didn't even get a half a gallon before it foamed up again and shut off. This was even flowing very slowly. I put it this way it took me almost 30 minutes to get ten gallons of fuel before I got fed up and left. I have been to both stations many times over and this is the first problem I've ever had.
i have to only put the nozzle halfway in when i fuel up or the pump will shut off.its not venting somewhere.or it could be the pump.is it a possibility its pinched or collapsed under the bed somewhere?
I couldn't really tell, it shouldn't be pinched cause when I removed the tank i was by myself so I dropped the tank instead of removing the bed so it shouldn't be pinched. I wouldn't think it would be the pump either. I have used that pump before many times but prior to this time I used it I still had the inner filler neck in it. I'll get under it Wednesday (next day off from PAPA JOHN's) and take a closer look.
i found out the shell station here i cant even put the nozzle in 1/2 way or is foams up. the turkey hill here i can stick it in 1/2 way and let it flow like a normal gasser and it clicks off. both were small auto nozzles.
that was the funny thing. I tried it holding it where I could actually see the fuel going into the filler neck, 1/4 way in 1/2 way in, 3/4 in, and all the way in and it didn't make a difference. it didn't even matter how fast or slow i pumped.
Maybe the pump has gone bad causing the fuel to foam up???
A couple of weeks ago I had a similar problem with the wife's Escape -- no matter how slow I pumped, it kept spitting out. No problems before or since.
I tried running mine without the vent hose and thats what it did to me. I don't know whats different about my truck compared to Dave's but mine will be a picky eater without that vent hose. Its the air trying to escape from the tank that causes the burping and foaming.
I ended up using some 5/8" rubber fuel hose to replace the original vent hose since it was badly mangled.
Only thing I can suggest is to put the vent hose back in.
Diesel foams when you pump it.
Even when I am fueling a piece of machinery with a 150 gallon tank and a 4" fill hole right into the top of the tank I can see several inches of foam on top of the fuel.
And when you get close to the top, you have to slow down and wait for the foam to break down.
Where I normally fuel, I park with the front down hill and slightly lower on the passenger side, which puts the fill hoses on the high side of the tanks.
The difference is probably my dump bed, my fill tubes are flatter than a stock truck.
When the vent hoses were in the fill tubes, 40 minutes to run 60 gallons of fuel in the tanks.
After I pulled the vents, 10 minutes.
I had the same problem with my truck. Took 45 minutes to fill both tanks no matter what I did and I tried everything possible. I finally pulled the tanks and constructed my own air vent system. Now I can pull up to the big truck 25 gallon a minute nozzles and run em full blast. Less than a minute for each tank. The air vent system on these trucks are poor at best. Don't take much for them to fail.
Well, yes diesel will foam just from pouring it. What I meant is the air trying to escape out the same hole is what caused problems. At least it did in my case. I agree that the vent system is poorly designed and I could never run a big commercial nozzle at full blast even if it did fit my tank filler.
I never timed my refueling time, but I would guess it was under 10 minutes per tank.
