hello all. will be putting my oil pan, and intake plenums on in the next few weeks. should i use the grey ford rtv or the black stuff from the fel pro gasket kit? any body ever use anything other than the grey on their oil pan? dont wanna have to pull it apart next year thanks for the info
I have been told that other than the majic ford gasket sealer all others contain a byproduct that will make your oil foam. I dont know how true it is but that is what i have been told
Granted, the "Ford Grey RTV" is supposed to contain mystical, magical adhesive powers......I conducted research a few months back and the closest that came to the chemical makeup is the Permatex Ultra Black RTV.
Is it the same? Beats the hell out of me but many of the components are the same. To date I have not used the Permatex but I believe that a few on this forum have and to my knowledge no negative comments have been voiced.
Somebody is making the Grey for Ford...It's just a guarded secret. I doubt that if a good quality RTV is substituted no harm will come of it.
thanks for the replies guys. i used the ultra black on dads motor this past winter and there wasnt any problems. knock on wood. trying to justify shellin out $24 for a tube of the international grey junk. good info fellas
hey chris,
i just got done reasealing my plenums on my 97 5 days ago and i used black RTV silicone with no troubles. i just put 2 small beads of silicone all the way round and let it set up for 15-20 mins before i put them on the truck. they must have had a small leak because my boost went up 3-4PSI.
good luck!
mitch.
also... why did you have the oil pan off?
oh and rog, what is that pic in your avatar? is that a test ball?
I was going to tell you that I got it from a Proctologist but decided against it.
It's a gizmo I made up to check for air leaks, (Boost). I remove the 6637, hook it to the boot, apply air pressure through a regulator valve and gauge and use soapy water and look for bubbles. I charge the system with approximately 25 #
I know not all rtv are the same. The gray stuff from Ford is just some really good, sticky stuff and I personally won't use anything else for stuff on the motor.
I don't know or care what's in it, or the fact it has Ford on the tube, but it is good stuff. I have been told by others that have used regular RTV on the oil pan and it didn't last. Not first hand knowledge, just what they told me.
There's an engine builder here that has some even stickier stuff, not sure what it is, but they actually lifted a V-8 Mack motor off the chassis trying to pull the intake off the motor that was only held on with his rtv.
Use the Ford stuff or Wacker T-95 RTV, the company that makes the Ford stuff. Most other sealants (RTV) will cause the engine oil to aerate...not good for our engines' injectors.
I agree with ^Jim^, it's the only sealant I use for everything. That stuff is virtually indestructible and will hold even after the bolts have been removed....gorilla glue .
Because of this thread I have been doing some more research. I can't find anything re "Wacker T-95 RTV" All references refer to "Wacker T-442 RTV" IN #1812376C92
Possibly there has been a number change. Anyhooo, I found out that the Ford or Wacker is an epoxy RTV, does not allow the engine oil to foam when in contact and is by far a superior sealant with no equal.
I was unable to find a price on the Wacker product but I would imagine that International will supply it at your request.
I also found a couple of "Anti-foaming agents to add to your oil that will counter RTV reaction should you decide to use another RTV:
Fleetrite CH1824392
Perhaps that's what I need for the differential pan. Changed the gear oil in it and it leaks. First I used the orange stuff and it leaked. Next I used the gray stuff from the local parts house. Let it sit for about an hour before bolting it up, and I noticed I have a small leak again. I'll try the ford stuff next.
I used the Permatex Black on my rear diff with no problems...
OT but you said you are re-sealing your plenums. I was on a diesel site yesterday and they mentioned something about selling bigger plenums from a superduty for an upgrade to ours. Anyone know about that?

Yes, late '99 - '03 had 3" plenums, will only work for you if you make your own intake pipe, or have an intercooler and use the SD Y, or if you have a SD turbo mounted then use a late '99 - '03 Van 'Y' (no IC).
