I've given up on checking it hot, it never reads the same thing twice. So i'm going to try it cold. Do I need to start the engine and let it run, or check it with the engine off?
Brandon, you need to do the dip-stick read 5 times in a row, one after the other to get an average. Then go with that. Yes the truck has to be on when checking the fluid, also have it at operating temp.
Good info, I didn't know the truck needed to be running.
It usually is stamped on the dipstick itself- it will say to test it hot, with the engine idling and the trans in park or neutral depending on the rig.

Thanks! I must have never seen it there, have to go look now..
Why couldn't it just have a fill plug? Ist time I checked it, before wiping the dipstick off, it was full. I wipes it off and checked again and it was in the cold range. I added about 1/4 of a quart and checked it again and it was just a little over full. I think i'll just leave it alone
