Yes, it matters. Sounds like it was running extremely rich for a long time. Clean it out with a rifle bore. I also suggest doing the Seafoam treatment.
If the hole of the manifold is elongated, you have much bigger problems to worry about!
It pobably is the egr spacer but, after replacing the spacer, if it still misses, here is something that is really off the wall but it could be the problem.
Check your harmonic balancer. With externally balanced engines, if the rubber ring that holds the outer ring to the hub deteriorates the outer ring can move, the balance will be thrown off and the engine will shake like its missing. This is most noticeable at idle. Less so at higher rpm.
OK I got everything changed out today. I put the egr spacer that came off my 400 79 Bronco and cleaned out hole in intake. Cranked it up ran alot better. I started missing with timing and noticed if I turned the dizzy counterclockwise it started running better and better till I hit the radiator hose and couldnt turn it anymore. I think somebody took the dizzy out before because it wasnt inline at all. So took dizzy out, got engine to tdc on number one lined rotor with cap droped it back in, runs like a champ.
With the old carb the engine smoked. When I put the new carb on two days ago it stopped smoking. Now today I cranked it up and its smoking again. Smells like to much fuel and a little bit of oil burning to. Engine has 140-150psi across all cylinders and has no blowby when the oil filler cap is removed. Plugs show no signs of oil.
Maybe the reman carb I got from advance is just a peice of crap? Thanks for all the help.
