Oil in coolant

I installed a coolant filter about 8 months ago and changed it out yesterday for the first time. Unfortunately, along with the grit, there was oil. The filter was black. Are there other things besides head gasket that would cause his?

I would imagine that you would have a lot of water in your oil if a head gasket failed due to the pressure difference maybe a little oil in the coolantwhen it cools down. I have seen little bit of oil like substance in green coolant before, not sure what or why.
Before the wind leaves your sails, check the oil.

Oil in the coolant on a 6.0L is typically a sign of oil cooler failure. I haven't seen or heard of oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil on a 6.0 as a result of headgasket failure. Not saying it couldn't happen, but it would be VERY VERY rare. What makes you think it was oil? It can be exhaust particulates from the blown headgaskets making it appear to be oil. The coolant filters can get very nasty very quick.......usually within 500 miles they need to be changed.

I think you're right. There is no water in the oil as the oil looks fine. The truck also is not modified in any way so the head gasket issue is not as likely. Where is the oil cooler located?

Between the turbo and engine oil filter, but underneath the engine oil filter. I couldn't find a good picture to show it to you quickly, but I can tell you it's a pain to change because of the amount of things you have to remove to get to it. Check Ebay before pricing at the dealership. I know one shop that changed 6 two weeks ago on 6 different trucks. You should look in your degas bottle also, as this will easily show the oil. Automatic dishwashing detergent is usually the best thing to use to flush the cooling system out with because of it's low foaming properties.

If it is just a matter of removing stuff I'll probably give it a shot. I can't find the pictures on the tech post. I also know there is a good post on the order of things that need to be removed but I cannot find it.

This is from brickie ....

To replace your oil cooler:
The boost tubes, alternator, intake manifold, egr cooler and oil filter housing all have to come off. If its an 03 motor, the turbo has to come off to remove the intake. If you are used to wrenching count on the best part of a day.

It would be nice to have a good write up w/ pics on this for the Tech Folder - if you take on the job in the future!

Again from brickie:

A book that you should get if your diggin into your motor: Tips and Tricks for the 6.0 by Bruce Amacker. They aren't cheap (100 bucks)but IMO worth every penny. Ebay has them or turbo training web site.

Thanks again for getting that for me. If I do this I'll get an overhead creeper. Looks very comfortable.
