223 temp. trouble
Today while driving my 1960 F100 223 it suddenly started smoking moderately but steadily from the crankcase vent tube and oil filler cap. And...the engine temperature was fluctuating which seemed to have an effect on the amount of smoke. Engine started making a hollow clattering racket. Got home, engine was very hot but there was no pressure release when I then popped the radiator cap.
Bad thermostat? Cracked some-thing-expensive?
Is the smoke problem what's driving the temp issue or the other way around?
If you did, be sure you warm up the engine several times to operating temp then top off with coolant - if the thermostat is not open (engine cold) the radiator will appear full but when the thermostat opens it allows the coolant to flow and the block will fill. The result is your cooling system is only about 1/2 full of coolant.
The temperature fluctuation is due to intermittent steam, then coolant, passing the temp sending unit. Usually if you have an overheat and not pressure at the cap, there is NO coolant in the engine.
Check the oil and coolant levels to make sure they are correct. Check the water pump drive belt tension (or that the belt is even there) - and then as Ross suggested, check for one or the other bypassing into the opposite system. Be sure you are mixing coolant to water at 50%.
And...I found my intake & exhaust manifolds were not very tightly torqued (some bolts barely finger tight - My bad from replacing the gasket a few months ago)- don't know if that is in anyway related to the smoke.
PS. The plugs are not fouled.
Question: was the white smoke actually smoke or was it steam (smoke will linger, steam will dissapear quickly). Oil smoke is usually gray and unburned gas black
I would fix all the problems - thermostat, guage, manifolds, etc. Then, I would change both the oil and filter. If the oil got that hot it's probably lost quite a bit of its lubrication quality.
Try putting the next higher viscosity in this time. So if you ran 30 weight, try 40....just a suggestion. Maybe one of the other guys can recommend an additive to help with the blowby or oil burning.
PS.... and of course you replaced the head gasket and valve cover gasket when you pulled them off, right?
