The single wire to the switch on the map light is hooked to the outbound side of the 15 amp circuit breaker which is physically mounted to your instrument panel in a stock wiring signal flow. On the diagram, it is denoted as "Dome Light."
Is it actually a map light or it a dome light? My truck had a dome light in it when I got it from my dad 30 years ago but I don't know if it was a stock piece. Unfortunately, I lost the light but fount the bezel some time ago. I even found a glass lense that fit the bezel. I would like to see a picture of the light, please if possible, post a picture of the light.

Thanks
I have the whole light assemble. I'll try get a picture latter today or first thing AM.
On another note; When I was a kid I seem to remember a (map) light that plugged into the cigar lighter, anyone else?
Ok, different puppy. This is a map light that is normally for passenger cars
The light I was thinking about is up on top of the back window. This is an no stock item for a truck-auxiliary type of light - used in many vehicles. I'm assuming that unless you have some weird tubes in your truck, it's mounted on the underside of the dash in front of the defrost tubes.
You can hook it up just about anywhere that supplies power. One thing to consider is whether or not you want it "switched" ie - to be powered all the time or just when the key is on. It's always nice to be able to turn on a little light without having to turn on the key, but it's a pain when you forget it and have a dead battery in the morning.
If you want it switched, wire it to the "ACC" (might be labeled "GA" if you have a stock ignition switch) post on the ignition switch - which also goes over to the gauges. If you want it to turn on all the time, you can wire it to the negative battery post, the starter solenoid post that attaches to the negative battery cable, the "BATT" post on your ignition switch, or again the AUX post on the 15 amp circuit breaker on the instrument panel - on a stock set up, that's where I would power it - then it's protected.
When I bought this truck about 5 years ago it had an old, non-working light just like this so I figured, wrongly I guess, that it was an optional accessory.
Though I rarely drive either truck at night, I will wire it up as you suggested as it will be a nice touch. Thank you for all your much needed info, Brian
