6.9 Power

I have an 87 ford f-250 4x4. It has a 6.9 with a banks sidewinder turbo. The truck runs good but seems to lack power on the low end. When i haul our 6,000 pound forklift the truck really strugles until it gets to about 1500 RPM. Then after that it is still slugish and is doing good to get to 65mph. It has a c6 transmision and the turbo is boosting loaded around 10-12 psi.
Also the motor has slight amount of blowby

When has the fuel filter been changed? Is the air filter clean? If either are dirty it can cause your problems, although a dirty air filter can cause excessive black smoke.

I just replaced the fuel filter and it has a K&N style banks air cleaner. The truck smokes when you dig into it but i turned the fuel up a 1/4 off a turn

eolive19,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

Do you have any idea how many miles are on the IP and injectors?
How many miles are on the engine?

What are you hauling the fork lift on?
It it very heavy?

The injection pump is the original as our the injectors to the truck so they have 210,585 on them and the motor is used and has around 185,000 in the truck. the original motor had a oil pump failure and it locked the engine. As for the curent motor i dont know how many miles it had before it was installed in my truck. The forklift weighs around 9,000 pounds towing on relativley flat surface.

1: thats a lot of weight, does it include the trailer?

2: thats an overdue injection system. Both injectors and injector pump should be at least tested by a shop.

A proper shop will be able to install the pump on a test bench and see if it still works as it should.

Generally the injection system only lasts about 100 000 miles in these trucks. They are considered wear items. I'm really impressed they held up that long.

I wonder if I need to replace my fuel injectors. I have just over 210,000 miles but it runs perfectly. What do you guys think. IP was replaced at 170,000 -ish.

eolive19, my guess is you need an IP and injectors, having both tested at a shop at the very least if dollars are tight.
But also consider, you will have to pay to test them, but they may cut a deal if you buy the new parts from them.

If money is not that tight, replace them.
www.mwfi.com
has decent prices and a good reputation.

Double zero, I am going to say you are also due for injectors.

Both of you, remember to get the injector return line kit when you get the injectors.

well its not an everyday vehicle. I'll probably wait later. Its running too good to fart with it right now besides the new return lines, o-rings and tees only just barely have 5,000 miles on them.

When I bought new injectors, they came with new O rings and copper seals ready installed. I see no point in replacing the lines and tees unless they are really old or damaged. Just pull all the lines off as one assembly if you have a recent install.

Thats the "disadvantage" with these IDIs. The fuel injection system usually doesn't get bad enough to affect idle quality but can affect fuel economy and power. Performance typically drops so slowly that you don't even notice it. The IDI design is typical for being able to run smooth and reliable even with injectors popping at different levels and compression variation up to 25%.

But when everything is nearly perfect.....oh man...

well when I say its running too good....well I haven't put a HEAVY strain on it since November except for my Taurus after I hit a dog with it on the way home from work (that was a very ****ty night)...as I was saying the last time I checked fuel economy three weeks ago I'm still getting 16.5 17 mpg in the city! Haven't really done highway miles trip lately. Towing the car it still had plenty of power. The truck has always been a little sluggish towing til bout 50mph when the torque curve grunt of the engine starts to kick in but it has done it since i've owned the truck once I hit 50 I can pass anything out there cept maybe one of those fancy sports cars lol. I pass that to it just being N/A though. I take good care of this truck...well its 750 miles overdue for service, just haven't had the money, I hate being broke (another reason i'll wait)....ah well. Until I see any performance dwindling i'll let her keep on rollin.

(as a side note david I didn't purchase the tees individually the return line kit I purchased from napa came with all the o-rings, lines, hose clamps, and tees so I just replaced it all.)

What I meant is that IF you replace the injectors they will probably come with new O rings in which case you can reuse the tees and return lines you already got. For 17 MPG city I wouldn't touch anything though.
