I started my F350 2001(7.3) the other day and the engine sounded different. It almost sounded like someone had poked a hole in the exhaust just under my seat. I opened the hood and the sound was louder but now I thought it sounded like a bearing going bad....a higher pitched sound. All of the sudden the sound started to fade away and just disappeared. Now I almost think I’m hearing it when I first start the truck but it quickly fades. Does anyone have a starting point on this?
Another thought....kind of sounded like it was coming from the top of the engine. I’m thinking something is having a problem pulling a vacuum when I first start the truck. Would the waste gate on the turbo cause a change in the sound of my exhaust?
WIERD.. I just got down from crawling under my truck. Pulled truck out of garage and i thought, "what the hay" Up pipes leaking? Crawled around.. Nothing. I wrote it off as I was hearing things. I guess i am not the only one so it might not be just ME hearing !
If I heard this type of sound I would remove the serpentine belt and start it up to see if I heard the noise. If not then the noise is coming from one of the components driven by the belt. If you still have the noise then you would know what isn't causing it. Got to narrow it down some how.
My brother and I spent some time looking around and he thinks the noise is coming from the turbo. It happens when I first start the truck...a very short but odd high pitched noise. On about every seventh start the noise will sometimes last for about 30 seconds and just fade out. Could someone describe to me what happens when a turbo starts to fail? What symptoms do you get? Could this be an oil supply issue with the pedestal? What should I look for? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Remove the air intake tube from the turbo so you can check the compressor wheel for play. Just the smallest amount of up and down, left and right play is acceptable. Absolutely no in and out play. Make sure it is not making contact with the housing. All the vanes should have nice clean edges and no chips.
Mine noise sounded like i have a donut leak. Can't find anything. I have double trouble checked. I think it is just from riding around in quiet vehicles then i get in mine and think "UG"
Seems to me a bad turbo bearing would make it blow a lot of smoke.
.
When you described the noise the first thing that came to my mind is loose rocker pedastals. The lifters are all loose and then when the oil pressure hits they pump up enough to quiet down the noise.
RGR...I'll look at the turbo this weekend. Thanks for all the advice everyone.
Don't forget to try removing the serpentine belt. That will eliminate allot of spinning noises and will let you concentrate on the turbo to see if that is the noise.
