engine surges when stopped in (D)

When I come to a stop while in gear aka Drive (It's an auto), my idle surges from 600 to 1000 every 4-5 seconds. Something is wrong as it just starting doing this.

Where should I troubleshoot first?

Do you have AC? Is it turned on? The compressor could be cycling on and off, causing an increase in idling speed when it turns on.

well, thanks to your suggestion, I looked.... the AC wasn't on, but the defrost was "on" but not engaged, meaning the fan was "off"

When I turned my defrost off, the problem stopped.

Is this something to be concerned about?

Nothing is wrong. I do believe the defrost runs off the compressor. I would assume even though the fan switch was off, the compressor would still cycle.

okay, I only asked because my AC is not currently working. Was wondering if the issues were somehow related.

thanks!

There is an idle air controller, and normally it should be able to control the idle extremely well. As they age and get gunked up they do not respond as quickly, causing idle surges. They are about a $45 part at most parts stores. Pretty quick and easy to replace. You can try cleaning it with throttle body cleaner (not carb cleaner) and see if that doesn't help.

Right on the back of the throttle body. Should be one connector and two mount bolts.
