I went to my local auto body shop and asked about the rust on the bottom portion of my 1992 Explorer. Its under the door on the side skirt. The guy tells me I need a new rocker panel which is going to cost anywhere from $1,200 - $2,500 including the labor. Now I'm not all that great with cars but I know that it doesn't take much to put on things like side skirts (ground effects) or running boards. I was just wondering if it really is my rocker panel thats bad and if it was a b*tch to replace. Any help would be great.
Thats total bull##### if you ask me, my dad's 92 F-350 4x4 drw is rusting also right on the skirt underneith the extended cab part. And while id still not expect it, his 88 f-150 4x4 is doing it in the exact same place also. My dad went ahead and replaced those panels on his 88 though, he had some bids on it and most places wanted about 1800-2200, he didnt want to pay that much on a truck that was only worth 2500 or less so he bought the panels out of jc whitneys and him and my grandpa put them on. id take a look at jcwhitneys.com or a magazine cuz those aftermarket panels are pretty cheap.
BTW: if ford stop making vehicles rust then im going to buy a puke chevy
ya i 've go to do one of my rocker panels 91 explorer. i have a friend that welds and he said he'd do it for me and just have me pay for the part. He told me he'd order the part and just to give him $100. Now thats the price of the panel. . No 1,200 to 2,000.
you can buy the panel and to try to find a spot welder you can use.
Maybe you can rent a spot welder form an eqiupment rental store.
definatley do it yourseld.
or use pop rivets.
