I was hoping you guys could help me out ?
I have a 1995 f250 longbed, 460efi, C6, 4 inch lift and 33 inch tires.
It has 125,000 miles on the clock.
It runs excellent and dosent leak a drop....
But lately i find myself out on the interstate running 1000 miles at a time.
I dont tow a lot, but it has a truck camper on it all the time.
The C6 is getting iffy!
Now...will the zf manual make much differance as far as highway RPM's and MPG on the highway? I read somewhere that the zf 5th gear is .77:1 and the c6 is 1:1
Also, which tranny is longer? and a quick look under the truck shows more mounting holes on the frame rail for the cross member.
Any help is appreciated......
The ZF would definitely be a good upgrade. If I had one of our era trucks that did not have overdrive, it would be one of the first things I would do. It will drop the RPM down on the highway and help with fuel economy. It will also put less wear on the engine.
There are several people on this forum that have done the ZF swap. I don't really know what all is entailed in that swap. Maybe one of them will chime in.
Yes, thats what i thought also........ im assuming 1:1-.77= a .23 reduction in RPMs at cruise. According to the vin code it should have the 4:10 rearend.I will eventually replace the TTB front end so no gear change option.
Anyone know what that engine turns at 65 mph stock.. I guess? or with 35 inch tires.
I will buy a tach later this week.
Does any have a general idea of MPGs/RPM 5speed manual vs. 3speed auto?
thanks in advance
The 460 will pass everything up on the road except the gas station, and it is a thirsty beast in many trims. I had thought the c-6 wasnt offered in the trucks by 95, and only offered in vans and heavy duty vehicles if it was offered at all.
No matter, the C-6 is shorter than the ZF by 3 or 4 inches, the C-6 is shorter than the E4OD by ~7 inches, though the C-6 is the same length as the old 4spds, and close to the same length as the AOD/AOD-E/4R70W (but the AOD family of transmissions were never offered on a 460).
I know its a gas hungry pig no matter what!!
but, a few more ticks of MPG would be nice as much as i like to drive it. And... I dont have a tach yet, but the revs sound awfully high as it bounds up to 70+ miles per hours on the downhills.
Such changes to your rig never make sense economically, as quicklook2 has already stated. However, that being said, it's hard to measure the value of personal satisfaction. Many of us enjoy modifying a vehicle and experimenting. If you are one of those types also bph555, then I say go for the zf. Just keep in mind before you are finished it will cost at least twice what you initially thought.....:-)
c6 with 33in tall tires at 55mph will be cranking around 2300 rpm's.I would leave it be,after all these tranny's were in trucks and cars for years and were fine.People just started bit*hing about gas and all that emissions bs.If gas were 1.50 a gallon I bet you wouldn't even be considering this swap.Don't forget you have to get a flywheel, clutch pedal assembly, slave cylinder, shifter, new driveshafts, crossmember, pilot bearing.Should I keep going?
the cost of changing it over to a zf 5 speed from c6 would take 30+ years of driving to break even on the mpg saved.
keep the c6.
Yeah, the rule of 32. Rule states that any major upgrades will most times take 3 times as long as you first intended and cost 2 times as much. Not sure where I first heard that, but it's been mostly true for my projects.
