Does compound go on paint or buffer pad?

What is the correct way to buff? Does the compound go on the paint, then dry, then buff - or compound on buffer pad, let it dry, then buff? Would it be same for waxing?
Are there any good "how-to" books or videos available?

Supposed to go on buffer pad first - I personally don't think it matters but if you put it on the paint first it tends to sling the compound everwhere.
