I have a 2001 supercrew 4x4. When the front right wheel hits a manhole I get a harsh clunking sound that seems to be coming from under the floor boards. I have checked all of the steering components, ball joints, sway bars, etc but can not find anything. I have searched the fourms and found one post from a few years ago which sounds like the same problem but there was no suggestions outside what I have checked. It is sure nice when a follow up to a question is posted explainng what the solution was. Anyway hopefully someone out there has experienced this same problem and was able to solve it. I will be glad to get rid if this noise.
Thank you
Jack up the right front side and manually apply up and downwards pressure to the suspected tire. You may realize that there's a loose sway bar end link, bad ball joint, constant velocity, or control arm.
If not, pick up the whole front end and support it with jackstands. Tug on the exhaust piping to see if that's thumping/clunking, and include an inspection of the heat shield.
It could be inside the engine bay as well, a loose bolt that taps, and radiates the noise to another part of the truck, it could be the shock absorbers are bottoming out or the upper/lower ball joints, stabilizers, upper/lower lower control, almost anything.
I'd start by getting one side up and having a buddy hop up and down on the tire to simulate hitting a manhole cover. And if it's supported by jacks, follow your ears.
put the jack under the A-frame under the shock bolt. lift it up so the tire is hanging in the running position. dont jack under the frame so the tire hangs low and springs bottom out. i alos believe ball joint is the best bet.
i have had the same issues in two diffrent jeeps and two dodge ram pickups and all 4 times it was the sway bar bushings at the frame they may seem tight on the ground or jacked up but thats because theres almost always pressure on them. if there looks like there is any wear i would start there cause its and easy and cheap fix. good luck
