Code Scanner/Reader

What is the best Code Scanner/Reader I need to buy in order to bleed my brakes through the ABS module. I recently had to change out the master cylinder and I still have air in the system.

The cheaper ones wont read ABS codes, you'll have to shell out the dough.

I have a Innova 3140 scanner. It does everything except ABS. MSRP on the Innova site says $459, but I got my thru NAPA for less than $200 and it was a new one. I havent really had time to play around with everything yet, but it does live data, plus it will capture it. Not only will it read OBDII, but it will read the older stuff for Ford, GM, Chrysler and Toyota/Lexus.

Is there any other way to bleed the brakes through the ABS module without the use of one of these scanners? There was a mechanic in one of my local gas stations that said that I should disconnect the battery then I should be able to bleed the system. I don't think this will work so if anyone can verify that for me please chime in.

Thanks,
Robert

That's what I use and highly recommend it. If you like to do all your own work then this one appears to be the best one that I have used. I can run tests, program the modules if I replaced a part and capture live data. It'll pull codes from 9 of the modules that are on the powerstrokes(6.0s that is), if you have a gas burner I don't know how many modules would be on the OPs, maybe the same amount.

It's worth having and with license and everything you can have it payed off by pulling the codes of the truck 3 times compared to taking it to a dealer for 100s a pop. I have heard one person say their dealership charges a 150.

Probably a dumb question but a standard OBDII scanner won't work on diesels?

No, it has to be able to handle CAN.

The Innova 3140 I have listed above has the CAN protocol on it as well. I just looked, alot of the 3000 series from Innova has the CAN protocol on them. Check out Amazon.com for pricing, the 3140 is around $200 on there. I got mine at a NAPA for around $180 though.

Back to your brake bleeding problem, back bleed the brakes from the wheel cylinder, this pushed the air up to the master cylinder.
