A/C Compressor

the pulley on my AC compressor sounds like it is about to go out. Also, I have no A/C at all.
I looked up replacement in the service manual and it tells me I should have the A/C system serviced by an authorized tech.
will I release refrigerant if I disconnect the compressor and install a new one?

Is this a major project that should be left to the pros?

thanks

I just did mine because of the very same reason last night. For about $280 I put on a new compressor, drier, orifice and retro'd to R134. It took about 1-1/2hrs to complete. Piece of cake and blows 39 degrees running down the road and 44 sitting idle. Feels GREAT!!!

Aaron

P.S. Yes, if it has freon in the system already, you cannot change the compressor w/o loosing it. Hit your little shrader valve on the low side and see if anything comes out.

Thanks - is there some information resource on doing this? As I mentioned, the entire A/C section of my manual tells me not to do it myself.... like the conversion part you talked about, drier... and sorry, I don't know what the shrader valve is either... lol

If you pop the hood of your truck the accumulator will be on the left hand side. It is a tall black cylinder. On the right side of it is a little push-button valve just like on a tire. Push it a little bit to see if there is pressure there.

i'm wantin to replace my stuff too but was told that you had to have the system recovered first, and then once you've replaced everything you need to have it vacuumed out to make sure there's no air or water in the system before recharge. I've checked and most places want ~100$ just to vac it.

btw, where'd you get all them parts for that cheap? I paid 170 just for the compressor.

You will have to vacuum it when you are ready to install new freon. Napa for parts: Compressor was $189, Accumulator was $30, retro kit $34, orifice $3 and $18 for freon. Find a friend that has a vacuum and then charge it. Vacuuming it will tell you if you have any leaks. Make sure you put oil in your system putting it all together. I used 4oz. in the suction-side of the compressor, 2oz. in the accumulator and 2oz. in the condenser.
