Is there anything preventative I should do now that I've noticed the a/c compressor is getting noisy in my '97 Expedition?
I know - 'what's noisy?'! I ask becuase I really notice the sound of the compressor while it's running lately, especially when idling or at stop lights, so I am certain it has recently gotten louder. The cycling does not seem unusual and the a/c cooling (dehumidifying) seems to work fine but I have not measured it.
I am the original owner (ordered from the factory) and I seldom heard this compressor before, although if I listened I could tell when it engaged/disengaged. The A/C has not been serviced and the vehicle has nearly 120k mi.
Would more oil in the a/c system quiet this down? Should I have it serviced in case it needs a recharge or boost charge? Or is this just plain age of the compressor and I have to live with it until I replace it or it gives up the ghost?
In my opinion I don't think there's much you can do with a failing compressor, but your cycling on and off I don't think should be happening. I can see it doing this in the winter for defrosting, but not in the summer. If it cycles during the summer, you may want to add some freon to it. You can add freon with oil too, but too much oil is not good for the system.
