Crankshaft position sensor help

I ran the codes at Autozone and it says I need a new CPS. The mechanic I know says that could just be the beginning. What else usually goes wrong with that?

AFAIK, there are no codes that say "need a new CPS". Codes all indicate conditions or readings. That's the reason for the mechanic's statement.... a reading doesn't necessarily mean "need a new CPS". IF you post the actual codes here, someone might be able to help add further "meat" to this story.

Most CPS related problems can be fixed by cleaning the CPS plug and filling sockets with dielectric grease. They get wet and corrode, causing resistance, and sending a poor signal to the ECU.
