Ok guys, after 8 months of it sitting, 3 of which on jackstands, I Put the wheels on, put in a battery, threw in some fresh gas and started it up with no problems, drove down the road like it was just driven yesterday! Now I want to put it back into good driving shape and pull the sonoma from hell off the road for a bit while I replace the injectors and do all sorts of work, lol.
Problem Backstory:
When I bought the truck, the speedometer needle would skip around but I would have a rough idea of what i was doing (Somewhere +-10 mph of shown), So dad suggested I pull off cable and shoot lithium grease in it and put it back on, now nothing... :-(. Couple days ago he says he heard that lithium grease is not a good choice and that it should be cleaned with brake cleaner and then use that graphite powder stuff. before I try this just want to know if you guys think it's just dirty, or so worn out I should just replace it?
Also! K&N Makes a filter to fit into the original Oilbath Housing for the 240/300, p#E1080
If it reads nothing at all, no needle bounce or movement, then likely the cable is broken, the speedometer driven gear is stripped or the drive gear is worn. Of the three I would think the weak spot is the driven gear on the transmission end of the cable is the most likely culprit. I would replace or clean out the cable also, the grease is too thick and can strip the gear.
alright, when I first pulled it out I had trouble putting it back in and needed to drive it, when I did, i could hear the cable hitting something behind the gauges when it was spinning, but when i got it in, it stopped. I'll check it at the back end too. know about the price of a new cable?
Simular problem on the 65, make sure the connection at the back of the speedo is secure, found mine had cross threaded and not fully seating. There's a felt washer sets inside, imagine there's a specific p/n for appropriate lubricant I applied lite coat of oil, not much. Ended up lathering the cable with hi temp bearing grease before inserting into the cable. It's been my experience the graphite, and white lithium grease tends to dry out and cake loosing its lubricating qualities. Anyhow, food for thought.
John's F100, out of SoCal use to carry them, it's been years since done any shopping with them, if recall, the cables are generic, or aftermarket so use caution. Also, if shopping with John's F100, alway call and inquire if item is instock when placing an order, they bill you while the item can set on backorder from couple days to weeks. Perhaps another member can provide a source.
If so, all you need in the inner steel woven core.
Go to any autoparts store and buy a universal speedo cable core kit.
Cut it to length, use powdered graphite for lubrication, and install it in the old housing.
If you need the entire cable and housing:

No Ford Dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any. The truckandcarstop.com (800-243-8947) located in Orange CA has one (their #68-15076) for $19.00.
Their catalog sez 72" long, fits 1968/72 F100 C4, but the 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog says otherwise.
