That box between the seats is pretty full with the stock six in place. With any V-8 in the stock location you are going to have exhaust right against the sides! (Your seats will be smoking!) Maybe you would be better to find a 250 cubic inch six for it. They are about the same size as the stock motor and they can be built to put out a TON of power.
Heat in that box has always been a problem in those trucks. I would consider a remote location for the radiator if there is one.
those are a harder truck to find nowadays...I would keep it stock...there a reason they only offered a 6 in them...the front ends were very light duty...My best friends dad had one...a 5 window too...he learned how to drive on it too...3 on the tree...man that brings back good memories...Keep it stock...
Bill my 66 was a heavy duty model came with a 240 and a 3.03 3 spd. It had a crossmember with the 240 mounts that I ground off and welded new mounts I made. The tranny bolted right up. There was no tranny crossmember pursay just a mount on top of the tranny, top tailshaft bolts, that hung from the floor. A 302 with stock maniflods will fit inside the doghouse but changing plugs is a PITA.
Dave! that econoline is BAD to the bone! But honestly i cant afford to do that with it. I could put in the 240 i pulled from my 65, i'm not sure about the stock trans bolting up to the bellhousing of it or maybe just the tail shaft from the stock trans, i will have to compare them and see. the V8 sounds like more fun to me though, From what i have read on some other fourms the engine box has to be modified for the V8, or i could just make one, there is a crossmember available for the swap if i decide to go that route.
Can someone tell me about the HUGE chunck of Iron under the gas tank? looks like it is heavy maybe 100 lbs or more!
Bill, actually when I first came across the pic did not realize everything was reversed I thought wow the owner seriously need to adjust the rear brakes. Sounds like u are one the trac, came across couple links may be of some help, then again, may not. Perhaps the cross member used for small V8 would work for the 240 application. May want to browse the site, seems like there are few links to resources, although, suspect you already have several connections.
