You could try cleaning all the contacts on the ECM and the harness with electrical contact cleaner and re-installing................We all know what that dust out there does to things, Don!

Can someone explain what unplugging it does and when its plugged in what it does? Id appreciate that. Thanks!
The SPOUT advances the timing. So when its unplugged its like the vacuum advance on an older engine is disconected. If you are going to check the timing you need to unplug the SPOUT. I think the SPOUT also does something else.

Doesn't the SPOUT also do something else. I have heard it referred to as ignition diagnostic signal or something like that.

It is possible that it uses it as a diagnositic: if the spout is left out the computer will throw a code indicating that it can not find the spout. For all intents and purposes, it is for computer control of the spark timing.

The ignition diagnostic (IDM) is separate from the SPOUT circuit. SPOUT stands for SPark OUT. If the SPOUT is connected or removed with the engine running, it may set a code. I've never gotten a code when setting the timing, but I've never left it out for an extended period of time.

Ok, ok. Thanks for everyone responding to the SPOUT question but I didnt want to hijack this thread. It has to do with timing advance to control spark when engine is running. I just wanted to know just in case it ever came up. But, thanks.
