f-1 stock rearend, change pinion oil seal?
i've read the service manual, but there isn't much there. i have pinion seal that is leaking, dripping and slinging oil underneath the truck. can the oil seal be changed without disturbing the adjustments on the pinion gear? can the seal be pulled and replaced from the front of the rear end? if it is relatively easy, i might try it or farm it out. thanks, dick r.

yes..yes...and yes .the seal is change from the front.the pinion is set with shims,so you will not change that, and if you have any skills you should be able to do it.
remove the drive shaft, remove the nut, remove the dust shield, then the seal.
put back in reverse order, torque nut to specs(should be around 200 ft lbs),put drive shaft back on.
that should do it.i dont think i missed anything,if i did im sure someone will tell us.
hope this helps

The best thing to do is mark the nut with a centre punch.Mark the yoke and the end of the pinon shaft. When you reassemble just realign the yoke back onto the shaft, then tighten the nut back to the same spot.Dont over tighten or you will crush the spacer between the 2 pinon bearings and cause noises in diff. Its an easy job.

Dont want to rush into anything to quickly.Sometimes it best just to sit back and do all the proper planning before we just on a wim getting up and doing something with out properly thinking it through.lol Just think of all the under coat your getting applyed without even crawling under it.

reg 1952, you are right, you can't just rush into something. we have a new (junkyard find) flattie in the f-1 that doesn't leak, so now the only things leaking are the rear end, transmission and steering box. one question, what is the purpose of marking the pinion shaft, do i want that to be in the same position on reassembly? i assume the yoke is what they refer to as the companion flange in the shop manual? thanks, i think i'm ready to pick up the oil seal. in a week or so, i'll be asking about the rear seal on the transmission. dick r
