E350 torqshift OD on/off

I have an 05' E350 15 pass extended with the v10 and torqshift trans. I know how the trans is supposed to work with having different programming for the gas and diesel and have been really happy with the engine/trans combination except for one issue. I want to be able to disable the OD. It does act exactly like the manual indicates with how to make it down or up shift but I spend to much effort pressing the gas pedal or tapping the brakes to keep it out of OD in the hills and mountains when towing. The diesel programming does this but the gas version does not. I have called some of the performance programmers and they recommended going to the dealer with my request. I have never requested anything like this from the dealer and wanted some opinions before proceding?

Thanks,

My V-10 Van torqshift downshifts going down a hill when I tap the brake pedal. It won't downshift going up a hill into 3rd gear until around 60 MPH.

Thanks Jim, I'm trying to keep it out of 5th though. It does downshift out of OD (5th to 4th) when I step on the accelerator uphill or tap the brakes downhill but when I'm in the hills/mountains I just want to take it out of OD (use 4th gear) where it performs really well and I won't have to constantly force the up/down shifting.

check this sites out. maybe something there will help...

http://www.transmissioncenter.net/highperflist.htm

Rostra used to make a lock up delay module for the E4OD but it only worked on early trannys. i know of another company that makes a controller for the O/D lock up for the E4Od that works on all years E4OD, but could not find them on google. will dig up the info. maybe they play with your tranny too. will post again soon.

It will take custom programming to make this happen. A dealer is not able to modify the programming, so they won't be able to do what you want.

Thanks Neil, I may give them a call and see what they say about reprograming it. I have the 5R110 trans.

Thanks Mark, I was hoping you would say yes they could do it. dang. I was thinking about fooling the trans into thinking it was connected to the diesel but I don't think I would like the diesels shift pattern in the v10. Apparantly there is a single wire that tells the trans which engine it is connected to. Any thoughts on that?

w4gy, The gear selection is 1, 2, 3, D. D = 4th and 5th. The tow/haul button does not disengage 5th.

I am going to call around to some of the local custom shops to see if they can help. Thanks and let me know if anyone has any other ideas.

My diesel van has an on off button for the overdrive, but doesn't have tow haul mode.

If it will pull 5th then why not? Mine never goes into 5th going up hills unless the hill is very slight or I'm running 75+ mph. While towing my enclosed race trailer in tow haul it won't even go into 4rth on the flats if there is much of a headwind. In tow haul down hill it holds the lower gears unless I get into the gas pretty good to go faster. I like it a lot. Mine always seems to be reading my mind and is in the perfect gear.

Hi All,

I am brand new here. This is my first post/reply on this forum.

I realize this thread is over a year old now, but someone directed me here as this discussion is of interest to me.

I own a 2007 E350, V10, Torqshift trans, DRW, cut-away chassis.
Simply put, it's a motor home.

Like the OP, I wish to cruise in the gear just below Over-Drive. My E350 motor home loaded up with people, gear, towing a vehicle, all combined weighs 14,000 pounds. With that weight, the over-drive at lower highway speeds seems a bit strained. I wish I could select & stay in the gear just below over-drive.

On an RV forum, someone suggested I consider (if this is even possible) disabling the torque converter by cutting & splicing two wires to a dash-mounted switch. This way I can enguage or disenguage the torque converter as my load, speed or road conditions mandate.

Has anyone here done this modification?
What concerns are there from doing such a modification?
Could you help me identify the TC control wire to splice the switch into?

Ron

There is a lot of information on the RV forums that I read. I wish I could say that even some of it is correct....

Don't even THINK of doing this! Best case you'll only overheat the trans and burn a lot more fuel. That's best case. Worst case you'll be buying a new transmission.

Unlocking the torque converter will only generate heat. You won't get any more torque to the wheels, most of the time if you unlock when it should be locked you'll get LESS torque to the wheels, burn more gas, and make the trans a lot hotter. It's a lose-lose-lose situation. There is no win here at all.

Thanks Mark for your input. Between you and a couple others, that idea is definitely now off the table.
