Lower Steering Shaft Junk??!!

Gentleman. I came to the forum originally with what I thought was a 4X4 issue. Did the IWE solenoid change etc. Did NOT fix the problem. Finally brought it to FORD. They say I have a busted Lower Drive Shaft>: "It's pretty rusted and the u-joint looks worn.". What I told them was that the steering was rough and it felt it was in 4x4. What I DIDN't tell them was that it happens intermitantly. If it was the shaft it would constantly be tough to steer, right???? Does this sound suspect or what?? They still have it and are waiting for my ok to swap shafts. Its a 06 with 48k.

It does sound suspect to me.

Nearly everything under there with iron in it is rusty, they don't do anything to prevent it, but that doesn't necessarily indicate it needs to be replaced.

I would think they could show you how the u-joint wobbles or something to show that it's shot, not just that it looks bad.

I agree with vfr_man. Did you go in and look at it? Is it still under warranty? If so, let them fix it. You did say that the problem was still there after you changed the IWE solonoid.

Sounds suspicious to me also. Could be other problems with the 4x4 system, like vacuum leaks or check valves not holding vacuum. Could be a steering rack problem. Is the truck lifted at all? Could possibly be a wheel bearing. I would have them show me the steering shaft u-joint before it's replaced.

No lift. I decided to pull out of the steering shaft swap ($235 for part $95 for labor and $50 to diagnose) thats alot of loot to drop with the questions I have. When the truck is in 2wd the front drive shaft and cv shafts are suppose to spin right??? They do on my truck. Are they suppost to?

Yes they are. With all the new fancy/easy to use systems being created, fulltime hubs are the norm now.
Apparently nobody wants to save mileage with a free spinning front diff. anymore. They want the ease of 4x4 at the flip of a switch.
I still think this causes more problems down the line.
Got a flat on an oversized tire and a stock spare? Your screwed.
Front diff jam up? You're screwed.

Warn has just created a hub-lockout setfor the new Jeep Jk's that creates a free spinning front axle. I'm wondering if they will make one to adapt to the F-150's.

No NO no NO.. That is incorrect!!!!

New body style 4x4 f150's from 04- current, in 2wd mode SHOULD NOT SPIN THE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT AND CV JOINTS (with the engine running.)

If your truck does that, you either have a vacuum leak, Bad IWE actuators (wheel ends) or your Transfer case is stuck in 4wd high.

Search 'IWE System" and find the post titled " Everything you wanted to know about the IWE system ... and then some' on this forum and read all about the 4x4 sytem in these trucks. these are NOT full time 4x4s. and NOT AWD.

Hmm, I guess we need to define spin better.

I thought he (Boonin) meant they should spin by hand when the engine is running, not spin with the wheel while rolling down the road.

In 2wd and the engine running, the IWE's should be disengaged allowing everything in the front driveline to freewheel.

Oh...wow. Talk about a bad time to reply to anything.
The heat wave up here is obviously screwing with my head.

Yeah...disregard every bit of information that I said in that last post.
Wow....thats just.... depressing.

Thank you for clearing up all of that Fishin76.
