The way I see it is all groups have their idiots. It doesnt matter what you drive. Its just people in general. I have been known to act a fool on occassions and I drive a diesel but thats not the only vehicle I drive or act a fool in. HA HA!
I have seen a lot of posting on how great the rice burner guys are acting with their little pissed off bumble bee exhausts, and let me say, somebody must be in the wrong part of town. Either that or I am cause they all act like idiots around here. Racing up and down the freeway, and weaving in and out of cars and almost causing accidents. All laid back with their flat brimmed, foam trucker hats.
I have seen the 4x4 guys sit in a parking lot and just do burnouts for the heck of it. I saw one guy get stuck on a large snow pile in a parking lot one winter. I have seen the hot rods take off from a spotlight sideways, or on three wheels. I have seen the crotch rocket guys acting stupid riding wheelies down the road. So you name it and I have seen it. I have even seen the internet surfers acting stupid also........
As stated before its people in general.
Any group of people that gather, bring a set of values with them. If someone is acting disrespectfull, etc., if the group does nothing but watch the event, they are condoning it.
I laughingly joke when i say this but my dad was fonzie (not the actor)! He built engines (in the 1940's/50's in Los Angeles near Thunder Road) and raced Lion's Drag, El Mirage, etc. To this day when we go to cruize nites, etc., The senior car guys are the first to confront ANYONE who is even thinking about doing something- even when they see a cooler being brought, they as a group (5-10 persons) will politely & descretely inquire as to what is in the cooler to verify the absence of alcohol (as an example). While a wheel chirp can occur when leaving the parking lot (by accident or purpose), burnouts will onlt happen once- and the driver is spoken with perferably befor the next gathering otherwise when they pull in the lot, the conversation is polite but direct. The burger stand owner is very supportive as well. we know that one can ruin it for all.
One of the locations where "Peer Presence" is at work is at Bob's Big Boy in Burbank, Ca. 30 years of cruize nites with 150-500 cars showing- never a threat or misconduct to worry about. The atmosphere of no-tolerance is well known and keeps the idiots away- if not, they will be handled quickly even if that means calling the cops while the peer group keeps things under control until their arrival.
I think that's pretty awesome! Give Fonzie one of these from me!!
I love my truck and am proud of it. Part of that reason is because it is a diesel. Have I smoked someone out? Yes. were they driving in a rude and dangerous manner? Yes. Would I do it otherwise? .... Only to a friend... haha
I remember talking with another diesel owner and they were ... bragging, is the best/most appropriate word... about how they blew soot all over a cyclist on a public road. The cyclist was over as far as he could be, but this person did it anyway, and I believe hit the train horns too. That person deserves a thorough butt-kicking.
Every group has a public image. Controlling it is very difficult, but not impossible. I can't help what happened at TS or Carlisle, but I won't hang around people like that or condone it by doing or saying nothing.
I can see your side of it, and from my side, and with my words and actions, will fight it.

Dude, You are dead on with what I was gettin at! You've seen it too. And as far as you smoking out someone who deserved it, well me personally...yeah I've done that too when getting tailgated or nearly sideswiped. I am a strong believer in an eye for an eye, but even stronger beleiver in do onto others as you would want done to you. Kinda works both ways. I'm glad so many of you are open minded enough to see the whole picture, from someones else's shoes. I really hope it gets better, before it gets any worse.
To "that_guy" who called me a Gasser dick, haha clever, but not compleatly true. Used to drive a '96 Cummins 2500 5spd 4x4. K&N cold air, Magnaflow exhaust, Edge box, 5th wheel and full gauges. Was alot of fun and a hell of a work truck. You also said, define masses, well, masses as in every other type of auto enthusiest, every police officer, every hybrid driving hippy that gets smoked out, and so on and so on. Anyone who knows what a diesel truck is. These people are one day going to see a diesel truck comming and go, great here comes another deisel guy. Just like how many of you look at ricers now. You also said, "You cant come on here and not expect to get a response from people who want to defend themselvs". Well, the only ones who need to defend themselves to what I wrote, are the ones who are reckless and iresponsible. The good guys understand it. So, my question is, are you one of the guys ruining it for all the other fine folks on here who drive thiere diesels responsably?

The irony here, smoking someone out(no matter what the reason) is just as bad as the behavior that you are complaining about. I don't smoke people out intentionally even when they do that, I lay into the horn(what it's there for, rather it does any good or not, I don't know, but it's better then laying into the throttle). I'll tell you why I don't smoke people out intentionally, when I'm stopped at the bottom of the hill and have to get a horse trailer up the hill, even when not laying into the throttle, that truck is working and it's smoking...alot. Enough smoke that it actually stops traffic behind me for a solid minute it's that thick.
In other words, doing a smoke out(no matter what the reason) can "get" alot of people that don't deserve it and cause accidents.
If you are going to take the moral high ground, make sure you are a "virgin" what it comes to doing some of this stuff. Firm believer in an "eye for an eye" doesn't really go well with moral high ground. I'm not saying that I don't side with the "eye for an eye", but it doesn't work all that well when trying to take the moral high ground.

Well I wouldn't call you a "gasser dick", I also wouldn't call you a diesel enthusiast as well. There are alot of people and I do mean alot that would met your criteria just based on mods alone, but you talk to them, they didn't even know that diesels had glow plugs versus spark plugs. In my opinion, it isn't about the things that you have that make you an enthusiasts about something, it's the knowledge that you possess about it.

That's borderline logical fallacy. I could argue both ways, so I'll leave it at that.
i myself tend not to go to truck pulls anymore because alot of the guys who are in the stands are buttheads, i love my Diesel i love my Ranger, i love my Mustang, thats all, just because you drive a certain vehicle dosent give you more privileges
I think 03 was the last time I was at Carlisle Truck Nats. My wife and I saw a guy drunk doing doughnuts in the grass field on top in a Eclipse. He almost hit a lady pushing a baby stroller then realized he screwed up and went flying out of the park doing like 70 through the parking lot past security. I think they did finally catch him. That was after watching girls with their boyfriend next to them flashing their breasts in a group of guys circled around her. Umm no thanks not for me!
A lot of the general public have a bad view of diesel trucks. When you pay thousands of dollars to make your truck fast you tend to want to show it off. But that showing off hurts all of us. I remember my Mom says most of the smog comes from diesel exhaust. Well that really came back to haunt us in that the EPA made diesel trucks run so clean that you can't get black exhaust without a tuner. I see nothing wrong finding a deserted street out of town and doing your thing but when a guy races right in the middle of town he's blowing it for all of us. The general public gets annoyed and complains to somebody in public office and we get tougher EPA laws.
I remember my Mom says most of the smog comes from diesel exhaust.
That's not true. Most of the pollution comes from industrial use(and thus smog), not the travel sector. Now that is changing, but that's because of the sheer size of the travel sector now versus the industrial sector. You have families that have multiple vehicles now and you compound that and you have one big *** sector.
Plus look within the travel sector. Diesels make up for alot less of the transportation sector then gas vehicles, just by sheer numbers that can't be true. It would have to be to the point that one diesel vehicles emits 60% more emissions then one gas vehicle.
I really do miss my environmental economics class, we talked about this all the time and you would be surprised at some cost/benefit analysis and their outcomes.
This is a real problem for diesel enthusiasts.. Some guys think that engine power is directly proportional to how big of a douc#ebag you can be on the street.. Excessive smoke, burnouts, and street racing are all actions which give the diesel crowd in general a bad name.. Just about every diesel truck owner with more than stock is probably guilty of these actions at one time or another.. By the time the individual gets over it, there's a new kid on the block at the beginning of his learning curve..
The industry itself is trying to clean up the smoke.. Torco has come out with a lower smoke race fuel.. It's expensive and I have yet to see anyone who has put a drop in their tanks.. The Clean Diesel Challenge is a competitive event which was being organized, but never got off the ground, as interest was low.. Only so much can be done on the technical/mechanical side of things in regards to the smoke..
I'm a huge fan of performance diesel trucks.. I don't want to see this sport be limited because of negative pubic perception.. In the end, it's up to the leaders in the sport to set the example, and hopefully others will get the message and pass it on..
After the problems at TS this past year, it's a shame that people haven't wised up...
Tailgate me so close I can hardly see you in my mirrors, eat soot. Cut me off or turn out in front of me than go at a snails pace, get passed and eat soot. I do apoligize to the people behind me on the cut in the hill (I75 south coming in to Kentucky) when a bunch of gasser driving odiots cant take the cruise off and speed up to climb the hill. They have to eat soot because this old 6.9 will roll it getting back up to speed. I do use the tailpipe as a way to express my anger, but you can be certain it is better that way than me following you home and kicking your a@% in the driveway.

Now THATS funny, I don't care who you are! BTW I'm one of the "good" guys (mostly) except for the situations like kenpobuck described. Sorry, but I was the same way when I drove a gasser, I hate A-hole drivers who don't use turnsignals and do the same dumb s#!* as described above. Makes me veins pop outta me forehead!
