In my wife's '02 F-350 the shift lever is sloppy. And the indicator is a little off. How do I tighten the shift lever up. I am almost sure the indicator is adjustable like in my '06 F-150. I think so anyway. Once I get the shift lever tight I'll adjust the indicator cable.
Scott, there is a bushing for the shift lever shaft on the steering column that wears out. I don't have any pics or technical info but I remember that it takes about 10-15 minutes to replace and doesn't require major dis-assembly to do. When my son picked up his truck after getting the transmission rebuilt, he couldn't get it into reverse. The shop replaced the bushing and all was well.
Maybe this repair is something that Guzzle should have on his website. Sounds like it is becoming a common problem.
Thanks Farmdad. I guess I'll go to a dealer, get a drawing and order the bushing. Then I'll be able to replace it. I'll check my manual, but I doubt it has it.
Scott, I believe some guys have had good luck by tightening the linkage located below the column. Look at the column above the brake pedal while moving the shift lever. I believe it was a torx fitting.
If you take off the shroud around the steering column and move the gear shifter; look for horizontal play in the shift column. If you see this you need to replace those two bushings.
