My son has a '99 Mazda B3000. He has been having the wipers come on at random. I did a search and tried the cleaning thing but no go. So I bought a new stalk and put it in this afternoon. Everything works but the wipers will not turn off. I plugged the old switch back in and they would turn off and on. I figured I had a bad stalk so I exchanged it this evening with another new one and same thing, wipers won't turn off, but they will if I put the old stalk back in?
first thing I would do is to look at the mating connector and see if the color wires connect to the same color wire on the other connector, in the same place. I'd also count wires, same ditto. finally, id plug a new one in, and disconnect the battery for 15 min just in case the PCM had an issue.
Got a wiring diagram?, match the new one colors to the diagram.
good luck, diagnosing wiring errors over the 'net is real hard to do.
Thanks for the reply! I had some other things come up today and did not even get a chance to look at it.
I don't see why unplugging the battery would change anything because the old switch will turn the wipers on and off. The new switch will turn them on but not off. I even got a different new switch to try and have swapped the old one back and forth and it will shut them off, just not the new switch.
I have checked the plug ins on both switches and all the pins are the same as the old switch.
I hope to look at it tomorrow after work. My son is going to college next week so i need to get this figured out. If not I will put the old switch back in and he can just live with the wipers coming on by themselves once in a while.
the only reason I suggested unplugging the PCM is because EVERYTHING nowadays is controlled by the PCM or ECM : including stereo, headlights, power doors and windows, turn signals, etc.
First thing the PCM does on a restart after power interruption is to go and see what is installed or not.
Put new switch in and unplugged battery for 15-20 mins. Wipers still won't shut off. I tried pulling the turn signal fuse that I read in a search and they still ran. Put old switch back in and they turn off.
I had a Toyota Camry for a short time. I came out one morning and the brake lights were on. After I gave up and took it to a garage, I found out the problem was a bad alternater. I know! It IS nuts! The Japs do everything they can to keep you from fixing it yourself.
GOOD LUCK!
Check out the details on your vehicles VIN# & build site, in owner notificaton 00B40 in this thread & see if your vehicle qualifies, if so call the Dealer with your VIN #, to see if it's been performed. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/2...on-switch.html
If not, you may be able to get a free fix from Ford, as there was no time limit on the owner notification letter I got back in March 01, I believe it was.
So if you quaify, maybe reinstall the old multifuncton switch & make it Fords probem!!!!
