engine swap

hello everyone here,I usually hang around the 73-79 and 87 to 96 forums but I have a ranger directed question.a friend of mine has a 1994 4x4 ranger,it has a 4.0 in it and it blew up on him over the weekend,so we were thinking on a 302 swap, will the 4.0 bellhousing bolt up to a 302?any info anyone has for me will be greatly appreciated.

A 302 will not bolt in place of a 4.0. The bellhousings are different. As far as I know there was not a A4LD transmission made with the v8 pattern. So you will be swapping transmisions and probably the transfer case too.

As far as I know the transmission input shafts are the same regardless on the engine size. What year is your ranger? You must mean 2.3l as there is no such thing as a 2.4 in a ranger. Also, just curious why you are swapping in a 2.8? Rangers with 2.8s were very underpowered, I am almost certain the 2.3 had the same or higher hp. They are also prone to cracking heads and cam bearing wear just like the 2.9. I would scrap the 2.8 and drop in a 4.0 or a v8. The easiest power increase would be to turbo the 4 cylinder. Better fuel mileage and more power.

yes it was the 2.3 and i was very limited on funding and found then 2.8 for near nothing with only 103,000 miles on it and the years are 83 2.3 and an 84 2.8 both carburated
