Can anybody out there save me? I put a new bed on my truck with a rear roll pan on it. I'm in the process of putting in the last bolt in the bed strip ends and ran into a problem. The roll pan has a recessed license plate box right below my last carriage bolt. I can't see the bolt or feel it, space wont let me use any tool I have. I got the nut on and screwed down with a breaker bar and some tape, and turned it in as far as I could turn it from the top. Now I cant seem to get a ratchet, ratchet wrench, or any other tool on it, to tighten it down. Any suggestios or special tools available? Its about 7 inches in and maybe 2 inches wide if that much. I just spent all day getting it this far. Thanks!
Somtimes you just gotta take a break and clear your head and it will come to you. Im a Aircraft mechanic and some of the jobs i perform seem totally impossible with the amount of space provided to work but some how after not giving up and a few mountain dew breaks it all comes together, lol.. Sorry if this didnt help but good luck you will get it.
I kind of had one like this, where I had to use a box end with masking tape to hold the nut so as to reach in but I could turn it one wrench click at a time, took forever. After the fact I wish I had cut out more of the frame.
In your case four options, take a break, enlarge the opening (probably not possible), cut a hole from the bottom with a hole saw and snap in plastic plug afterward, or grind the square off the carriage bolt and put some kind of screwdriver slot (ugly) or get a carriage bolt with a allen/torx head and grind off the hex to turn just that one from the top

a flex socket shaft might fit.. springy, 3/8 drive on both ends.
this is why I went with the hidden bolt strips.. same type roll pan.
