Shock change out

Is there some special tool to use to help with the bottom nut on the front shocks? I can't find anything to put on that nut to hold it in place while I ratchet the bolt end. It's about to drive me to drink.

what vehicle are you working on?

usually on the shocks with the top post, i hold the shock body or rod with a pair of channel locks while i turn the top nut with an impact.

but i'm not sure if that is what you are asking or not.

here's a video of what i'm talking about.

if you can't get a wrench underneath to hold the bottom nut, you can just hold the top of the shock with a channel locks.
an impact helps. if you are lucky it will just twist the treads off.

It's an '06 F250 and I'm talking about the bottom of the front shock. The bolt goes in from back to front and the nut fits into a housing from underneath and engages the bolt there. I'm suspicious somebody has changed out the nut, bolt, or both. If this was standard, I'm pretty sure somebody on this forum would know what I'm talking about.

The nut is supposed to be incorporated in a one piece tab/nut. There are no tools used to hold the nut. You hold the tab and start the bolt onto the nut and tighten the bolt.

I think someone has changed yours, maybe lost the tab/nut and stuck a regular nut on it.

May be a Ford only item. Auto Nation Ford has the best prices.

Exactly. When I changed the shocks the bottom front bolt was literally the easiest. The upper nut on the pin drove me to drink... No clearance for a power tool, one seized up, at the end I cut the pin with a tiny little body saw.

I spoke with the local dealer. My nut is wrong, not sure about the bolt. I'm going by to order the right ones. On the other issue, I found the tops to be easy since I started using an open end wrench. It's tedious, but my knuckles are intact.

Got the correct nuts and bolts from the dealer and finally got them installed today. The bolt would not fit through the metal casing in bottom hole. I ended up driving that casing out of the bottom hole and then was able to fit the stock bolt through the rubber/plastic/whatever that stuff is that pads the bottom hole of the shock. Is it a problem to not have that casing in there? ?
