Due to my complete hatred of body work I decided my bed was too far gone. The front and tailgate were bowed way out of shape and the bottoms of the sides were nearly rotted off. That and the PO welded what looks like a 10 guage hunk of metal over the original bed wood.
Anyway I bought the one off Ebay from MidWest Early Ford and am very happy with the quality. However, they did not include instructions for assembly. Does anyone have a link to some assembly instructions?
Also the new bed is raw metal but oily. I'm thinking I need to wash it off with soap and water then prime it quick with a rattle can. Anyone have any better advice?
I think I would go with some de-greaser rather than soap and water....like one used for paint prep- to make sure you get all of it off and it wont affect the future primer/paint. Just my thoughts?
As for the oil, use a good wax and oil remover. I wouldn't use water, you're going to get flash rust real quick plus you'll have to make sure you get all of the water out of all of the seams. You have to do the same with the wax and oil remover but that's what it's made for. Also, once you get it clean scuff the box down real good with fine grade sandpaper of scuff pad and prime it with a good epoxy primer, taking all the precautions when spraying. If you don't prime it ASAP you'll get rust forming almost immediately.
I got one unprimed as well, and wish that I had primed it immediately..
make sure to prime BEFORE you assemble, and get all those nasty little spots.
inside the front end lip over the sides. where the rear rail attaches to the sides.
Be sure and prep it good. I got one of Carpenters bed's and it had a oily coating on it . My painter didn't prep it right and when he tried to sand the primer it came off in sheets. Can't say much for my painters practices though. Good luck!
