I was just doing some late afternoon thinking and was wondering if any of you all have seen a "temperature difference gauge"? I want the gauge to show the temperature difference between the Engine Oil Temp (EOT) and Engine Coolant Temp (ECT). If you have seen this before, please share what you know!
I have done some searching and really found nothing.
So ............... I want to rig one up if no one has seen one made specifically for this application.
What I was wondering ............
Could I purchase two electronic temperature sending units and connect them as follows:
1. Connect the high pressure sending unit positive terminal to an eGauge positive terminal. 2. Connect the low pressure sending unit positive terminal to an eGauge negative terminal. 3. Connect the low pressure sending unit negative terminal to the high pressure sending unit negative terminal.
This would “stack” the sending units and should cause the eGauge to read the difference (I believe).
Would this work? I know it works w/ thermocouples.
I am looking at eGauges because it is configurable for a visual alarm (that I would set at 15 degrees). I would appreciate any comments!
Most ECT and EOT gauges I have seen are both single wire. The thermistor is a one wire and the press. transducer is also one wire. Im gonna ponder on it a little bit, Ill post back if I think of anything of value.
Sorry to start attacking your internet business, but why you want to do that???
Man - I can't believe you are bringing me down ..................
Oh well, it just means the world isn't ready for my invention yet!
Seriously though, you should not have a difference in temperature of greater than 15 degrees F between the two temps (EOT and ECT). If you do, you probably have plugging of your oil cooler.
I do not want a row of gauges along the pillar or up at the mirror. I am really not too interested in the absolute temperatures yet since I am not tuned (and the fan is probably the best "alarm" for increasing coolant temps). So, I want a minimum of gauges, but I still want useful information. So this is what I decided to try to implement.
I have been saving up $$'s for a DashDaq, but it is expensive and I have grown tired of not having readings. I do have the factory boost - it is good enough for me. I went ahead and ordered fuel pressure gauge parts (I really think that is the most important reading, unless you are modded and are watching EGT's). Now I want to monitor this temperature differential without having to watch two different gauges. Also, when feeding the signal to a eGauge, I can set an alarm point.
I see your point but where the temp sending units are placed can figure into the difference equation too.
As far as the electronics are concerned, they be magic and I just know not the let the magic smoke escape. If you let the magic smoke out they won't work anymore.
You must be talking about mechanical gauges?
Most (probably all) of the digital displays will allow you to set from 1 to 6 or more parameters to be seen on the main screen.
I have mine set to display EGT, EOT, ECT and Trans Temp. simultaneously.
The EOT & ECT are right alongside of each other so a quick comparison is very easy to make.
