Question about a 03 6.0L

Hi guys Im hoping you can answer this for me. Im looking at a 2003 F350 with the 6.0L motor. Its only got 72,000 miles on it and the owner says its got a bad injector. It runs fine cold but when it warms up it has a small skip. If I could get the truck for around 10,000 is it worth doing new injectors and putting a warranty on it or am i opening pandoras box.

Get an OASIS report using the VIN at your local dealer. If the motor/truck has been healthy snach it up and get that injector fixed under the OEM warranty.

If it's a 2003 there is no OEM warrany. I would think for around $800 you could have the injector replaced.

Usually injector issue appears with cold engine, and it smooths out warm. Of course it doesn't mean it's not injector issue, just wanted to mention the common picture of injector related problem.
Get an OASIS, and see what got done on the truck.

First things first, get that OASIS report done. That will tell you all warranty work done to the truck. If you see repeat powertrain issues, pass the truck by. If you see no repeat powertrain issues then consider the truck.

I have one of the early 6.0s...number 812 off the line and mine's been great. I'm up to 93k on her without problem. These 6.0's (the early ones) were either great or they had problems...there was no middle ground in 2003.

ANY used vehicle purchase can be "pandora's box". That being said, you can really save money by buying used. Say you spend 10k on the truck and then you have to invest 5k in repairs and mods. BTW - for that kind of money you should be able to make it into a truck that lasts 250k more miles (IMO). You still made a great deal!

Two downsides to this analagy - repairs are cash outlay, rather than financed. Some folks do not have the available cash for repairs and reliability mods. The second downside is insurance. After some expensive repairs and mods, if you were to get into a wreck where your truck was totaled, could you get your money back out of it from the Insurance Co.?

I doubt that you could make a terrible decision w/ a $10k price tag! But you could end up w/ a few expensive repairs before you get to 150k miles.

Exactly correct. I still think it's a steal on a 72K mile superduty '03 or not. I however would be leary of a hot skip in a motor. Not really common for a diesel. 800 to get an injector replaced is outrageous. A good tech can do one in about an hour, and the injector is 300 Max.

This is true, but when you deal with a Ford dealer you will be charged much more then a diesel repair shop. A person mentioned not long ago that Ford wanted to charge him $500+ to replace a TFT sensor in his transmission which is a $60 part and 1 hour labor. The dealers are selling fewer vehicles today and it appears their trying to make up the loses by gouging people.
