I would want to have somewhere around 7000.00-7500.00 in this truck. 37,000 miles is great, but lets look at what all is nearly 10 years old on a 37,000 mile 2000 Excursion. Tires ? replace ? 850.00 Brakes never been replaced 150.00 Fluids 100.00 Belt 25.00 wipers 25.00 3rd Battery due 125.00 Filters 25.00 Aligment 50.00
I actually think you could spend 1500.00 on a 10 year old 37,000 mile truck just getting it to the condition of a 3 year old 37,000 mile truck.
Of course if it has been driven say 15,000 miles in the last year or so then most of the above does not apply. But if it has only been driven 3700 miles a year for 10 years an extended trip could and probably would creat a lot of problems.
Just give it a little thought. Now first and foremost it will be awful hard to find another with this low mileage. The 2000 model was a plug popper (4 threads in the head to hold the plugs in) so be careful changing plugs. The 2000 model did not have fog lamps, no big deal. Check the threads on the leather seats for age rot. Also take a good look at the condition of the leather and the steering wheel. In other words just use common sense and be alert. Best of luck on your decison and I hope you the very best.
Just what UrbanXX said above. I couldn't have said it better myself. You can put a lot of money into a cherry "looking" vehicle, just to get it road worthy, if it sat quite a bit.
Alot of good points made and excellent input. Esp Urbanxx.
they are asking 9500 and as of a year ago it had 25k miles (on carfax) so it has gone 10k miles in the past year and the seller did say it had new tires.
Heading out in about a hour to go see the truck and take it to Ford for a once over. will report back.
While you may have maintenance items - appearance and other wear items - seats/carpets, etc should be in better shape. For me - I'd pay a bit of a premium for a lower mileage, good condition Ex - in fact I did. I usually want my own kind of tires, brakes, shocks, fluids etc on the truck anyway - so I consider those things I'll take care of anyway.
For this truck - KBB actually has retail value at 10,700. I looked at 2 different 2000 examples - one with 67k and one with 99k at Carmax and both were going for 12,900 and 12,500 respectively. It's hard to put a 'true market' value on these as demand seems to be high - at least in my area. I think an offer on this of less than 10k in my area would be rejected - but it really depends on if the current owner/dealer is desperate or not!
I got mine in Feb from a Ford Dealer - 2000 V10 4x4 XLT ( leather etc... ) with 92K for $9,500. The previous owner was the original owner and had upgraded the truck '05 front / rear and HID, Brand New tires and interior is PERFECT. Not a single scratch and he had seat covers on all seats. Truck looks like it rolled off the showroom. In my area of NY that is considered a pretty good deal. Not great - but avg for that condition. I was looking at a 2000 Diesel 4x4 same exact but with over 150K and the guy was asking 19K so I guess it's all relative to what part of the country and what choices are out there when you are looking for your truck... You know what they say about supply and demand. I sold my Bronco for the same price I paid for it 2 years later -- All because the guy who bought it wanted a Bronco in the worst way and mine was impecable. Limited supply can sometimes work in our favor
To me miles doesn't mean much, except in this case. 60-80k up I'd be fine with. It seems that everyone who has major problems had it before the 60k mark. I'd prefer a higher mileage truck, because i Know the kinks have been worked out. I'm sitting at 185k, and you'd be hard pressed to tell it wasn't 85k, as it's had proper maintenance.
I'm with you on this one, mine is setting on 155,000 and is tight as a drum and 100% right except its going to need new tire this Spring due to the fact they are getting dry with age. I had to go through a few things like fix a few weird rattles and a couple of squeeks. Had the light socket in the drivers door that made all kinds of weird sound and squeeks at different ocassions, liked to have never found it. Tighted a phillips head screw and problem solved. I just can't stand MOANING and GROANING, SQUEEKS and RATTLES in a truck! These thing have to be fixed or its gotta go.
