Idler Pulley Tension

I have the passenger wheel well liner out to attempt the EGR blockoff plate install. I figured while I have access I would change out the alternator with a high amp one I bought a while ago. I can clearly see the idler pulley and the little u shaped clip that flips up to keep tension off the belt. I just can't figure out how to rotate the idler pulley in order to lock it. I kinda feel stupid on this one, usually it's the electrical problems that make my brain hurt.

Use a pry bar to pull on the belt. or a 1/2 inch drive will fit in the arm.

Be carefull!!!!! i had the clip slip on me while changing the alt and it about took off my hand.

Sorry, but I'm still confused. Do I pull the belt inward or outward? If I use a 1/2" drive where does it fit in the arm?

there is a square on the tensioner to rotate up towards the alt, but the easiest way to do this is grab the belt at the alt (fender side) and pull up on the belt by hand. Have someone lock the tensioner in at that point. To undue the lock just pull up on the belt again, once the alt is on of course, the spring will pop out and all is done. Let me know if you need anymore help
