Hello, I recently bought my 99 7.3, automatic, 4x4 for hauling my rock crawler.

I have one issue so far sometimes there's alot of squeaking up front. I am thinking this is a wheel bearing because it increases or starts the squeaking when I turn. Braking or swerving can sometimes stop or start the squeaking.

Other then that I just have to get some wheel spacers I think because my 35's rub the leafs when I turn sharply.

When I purchased the truck I noticed the turbo was extremely loud when I popped the hood I saw the intake was removed when the dealer repo'd it. After spending 10 minutes explaining to the sales rep that NO this is not an aftermarket turbo setup and the air filter is missing. He had the mechanic come out who said "oh yeah I'll go get one". I was the first tesdriver so it wasnt ran long without a filter.

Anyway that led me to wonder what else had been modified that wasn't so quickly removable... Where should I look?

I want to change my fluids before my first trip. I was wondering what
oil, tranny and tcase fluids are generally recomended? Anything I should know before doing it?

Ive also heard diesel fuel filter have to be changed more then the oil and that theres a trick to it to keep air out. Of course I didnt hear what that trick was

Any links to guides would be quite helpfull thanks!

AIbandet, welcome! These guys can get you out of just about all your truck prblems. Fulley said what I was thinking, but I have a few other things that you may look at. pull off that intake tube going to the turbo and check out that impeller, it should not look real bad.

Oh you may also check and see if your cam position sensor is the new grey on or the old black one.

Welcome to FTE!You can learn alot from this group and they will not let ya down.
Many use differrent things here but a 6637 Wix air filter is advised. You can get a kit from Clay(Rifraff Diesel Performance)
I run Rotella 15-40
Mercon 5 synthetic tranny fluid
Synthetic gear lube in the differentials
Change the fuel filter so you know it has been changed
Check on the CPS like was mentioned earlier.
Drive the truck for a few weeks and if anything comes up,if so,post up and we will help you anyway we can

I definitely dont change my fuel filter that often. 15-20K miles for me usually. Oil...every 7500 miles, but thats after an oil analysis from Blackstone. I too use Rotella T 15-40. The "trick" to the fuel filter is to drain the fuel bowl with the yellow "lever" on the back of the fuel bowl and then service the filter. No real "trick"!

I heard you have to prevent air from getting in the fuel lines I don't know why it would, I've never played with diesel so I figured I'd ask
If its the old CPS what does that mean? do I need to replace it?

This is my truck nothing to special 35" tires and 4" blocks

Heres the rock crawler. When it was a daily driver.

And its current modifications...

Welcome to .

Click on the links at the bottom of my sig that say RHN Guides, Maint & Mods and Guzzle's Web Pages for great info.

The squeaking in the front end could be the lack of or worn out spring tip isolators. My Early 99 didn't come with spring tip isolators. Do you know if you have a late or early 99?

Edit : I used to run te Rubicon from Wentworh Springs to Tahoe City back in the early 70's with a stock CJ5. I used to go right up the sluice boxes and not the bypass trails.

Thanks for the links Payson.

I'll go check the exact production date right now.

Little sluice isn't what it used to be alot of boulders with 5' + diameter have fallen off the hill side over the last couple years. There's alot of buggy's that can't make it through now. Hopefully it will just be a speedbump with 47's and rockwells . Though Ive heard rumors of an old school jeep club wanting to blow up the boulders so they can make it through on 33's again.

When did you serve? I just got out last year.

July '67 to July '69. Jeepin' in the 70's makes me an old fart.

These days I wouldn't be considered "Old School", it would be more like "Ancient School". I probably wouldn't recognize the Rubicon anymore.

She was built 3/98 so I would assume that's pretty damn early
