Post Best oil filter?

Alright, I just rebuilt a motor for thousands of dollars and I need a no-bull opinion on what filter to use. Fram, Motorcraft, Napa?

Thanks!
Matt

Best oil filter?

Check out this page for an informative article on oil filters. Undoubtedly there are lots of other pages if you do a search.

I personally like to use the plain wrapper version of the purolator. I have backed off of FRAMS due to the study mentioned below, plus a few others, but I have never had a problem with FRAM.

Of course you almost never go wrong with factory parts ecept maybe dollar wise.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

Ditto on Jim's post.
I read the same research. I switched from Fram to AC/Delco based on less lifter noise on initial startup. I think the weak point on Fram is the check valve. Otherwise, based on the oil anylisis on my engine, Fram met the requirements for filtration.

Best oil filter?

i have always used motorcraft filters on my truck, except for one time when i used a fram... too much noise on start up. motorcraft filters work good for me, the truck has 120,000 miles on her. wix are good i have heard but i dont have a napa close to get one, i just buy the motorcrafts from wal-mart for under 3.00.

OK, here is my no bull answer. I have used many different filters over the years, Fram included. I have used the high dollar filters and went as low as Fram. I have found a favorite. The purolator Pure One! This is a really good filter. I have never had one leak, I have never had the seal twist from tightening it, I don't hear lifter/tappet/valve noise from the filter backdraining. All in all it is a really good filter. The above mentioned study proves its capabilities. Its around 5 or 6 dollars, well worth it. The cheaper filters are only good for a few thousand miles and thats it. If you use synthetics and want to keep the oil in longer you want a decent filter, or if you simply want to be assured of good filtering over the life of the filter, it is a good choice.

regards,

Bryan

Best oil filter?

It all goes back to the sad part of advertizing....Marketing guys like anything that sells...
Take the example of Drag Racing... TOP Fuelers use the Fram racing system (exchangeable and washable. Not theres a good plan. like K&N for the oil system) and they are paid to do so, BUT it works and No one on the street will ever need it... It sells >>on TV (streetable type only)< to the masses..
Nothing will work in your car if you leave it in tooooo loooong.

OIL, COOLANT, batteries...ect.

I have known of the article for some time and believe it is an Independant review that brings to light some very good examples of what the average consumer will never know and the manufactures will not tell you to market the product.

Most consumers will be worried weather to use 10/30w rather than what the manufactures says to use, again its probally not wrong its just the Marketing hype after the fact..

You can go with the flow or choose to know!

ps: I care so much that i can`t remember what is in my truck right now..200000 miles and counting

not that some one else shouldn`t.

I read that research too. I have used Frams for years both on my vehicles and customers. When I first read that stuff I figured the guy just had it in for Fram for some reason, so I and several of the guys I work with decided to keep our filters when we changed oil, cut them open and see for ourselves. We were all suprised. We were able to see with our own eyes that what he was saying was true. I didn't, however, do an actual test on the filtering abilities of the different filters. But just seeing how little filter media they had and the overall cheap construction of the Fram, (and clones ) was enough to make me swear them off forever. I will never put another on something I care about. The Motorcrafts are the way to go for an inexpensive filter that looks "at home" on your Ford. The AC's got good marks too, but I just can't bear the thought of screwing one to a perfectly good Ford block ! Good luck, Phil

I too have used the Fram filters, and after actually opening one and looking at it, I have switched. I am sure the motorcraft filter is good, but I prefer the WIX/Napa filters. Some friends of mine use only them in there fleet trucks (18-wheelers), and swear by them. If I can't find a Napa, you bet I will use the motorcraft filter. You can also locate the WIX filters online for a cheaper price than the Napa Golds. Beware, Napa does sell a "Fram" type filter, the silver. I recommend staying away from that one, as it is not made by WIX. It is also 60% cheaper than the Gold's.

No need to pay the high price for Motorcraft; I buy them at Walmart. I presume motorcraft parts are the same regardless of where you buy them; if someone knows different, let me know please.
